Tax Relief?
« on: January 23, 2014, 08:47:12 am »
Do you guys claim for the electric used for running RO pumps and heaters? This is my first year producing my own water..

If you do, how do you work it out?

Sounds tight but every penny counts!

Cheers

You use home as office don't you?
That's electric used too.
I think I just claim 10% of the full bill.
You haven't got to work it out to the penny-just a reasonable estimate.

Dave, as a guide you can claim approx £300 towards using a room as a office. I presume you are on a business rate with regard to your water consumption & drainage ect ? Ed

Take the wattage of the pump/heater, etc.

Multiply that by a typical number of hours a week you run it.  Thats your consumption in watt hours for that item.  Add together that result for all the things you run.  Divide by 1000 to give KWh (kilowatt-hours). Multiply by the number of weeks you work in a year (47?).

Multiply by whatever it says is the price per KWh for electricity (dont use the gas price, much lower) on your bill.

Add in 20% of the standing charge.

Claim total.

if you claim for home electric etc do you have to register the home as a place of business then inviting business rates from council etc or is 10% like a limit you can get away with?

I have always added up the utility bills including council tax and claimed 1/6 of total for use of home as office. I was advised many years ago by my accountant to do this.

I also claim a separate amount for the water volume for my static system and get a waste water rebate from my supplier for the pure water.

No, just claim for a reasonable amount of electricity.  Rates/Utility Bills/HMRC are all separate issues, so what matters here is the HMRC part of the equation.  Claim for the electricity you use and youll be fine.,

I think my accountant puts down about £300 for ude of home as office i can check later if needed.

Also if you have bought a new laptop or similar and use it for work you can claim a percentage of the cost as well . Mike
