Reverse Osmosis advice
« on: January 03, 2014, 08:38:49 pm »
Sorry if it has been done before chaps.
TDS from tap is around 120-130. Currently using double DI but spending a fair few quid on resin. Just after some basic advice on what to use, how to install it etc. If you can even point me in the direction of some tutorials that would be great. I have room in my garage to set it up so any advice would be very much appreciated.

Paul.

How much water do you use a day? This will have a bearing on what r/o you need and also if you are on a water meter or not.

Spruce, thanks for the reply mate-much appreciated.
I am not on a meter thankfully and usually use about 400 litres a day.

1000 litre ibc with a pure freedom 300 gpd using an auto shut off. Then a transfer pump to pump it into your van. Your tank will be full in minutes, then your ibc will start filling with pure again.

Can't go wrong with this.

If in future you need a little more pure, then replacing the 3 x 100GPD membranes with 3 x 150 GPD membranes will give you an extra 50% more water for very little extra cost.

Paul , What was the outcome of this post.? Did you manage to get anything sorted as I am in a similar boat to you. but not using much water yet.
I got 2 x 11ltr vessels.  I need to buy resin soon and also a ro system , not sure which one also probably  need booster pump but will try without first and see how quick it produces
I just bought a 500 ltr upright tank (which can use in a  van later) and transfer pump which can be used to store pure. there seems to be plenty of ro systems on ebay ranging from 50/100 gpd up to 300 gpd also they got small di vessel for final polish. Would this eliminate the di vessel ? being new to wfp I find this a minefield. ..
Oh well ! Keep scratching my heed for a  while.. ::)roll ???

If you are going to do wfp seriously then you need to buy a good system at the beginning. IMHO I wouldn't go for anything less than a 300 GPD. 50/100 GPD r/o's are for fish keepers.

A 450 GPD unit (3 x 150 GPD menbranes) did 2 of us for 7 years until a 3rd cleaner started and then it wasn't quick enough. 40psi, no booster pump and waste to pure 3/1. Initially our waster quality was around 250ppm at the tap and the membranes took that down to 4. Later the water pipes were replaced and the tds of the tap went to 115. At 115 it was producing a pure of 3 when the membranes were 5 years old.

When I first started the r/o had 3 x 75GPD (= 225GPD) and that would have been ok for me processing water into an IBC tank but it wouldn't have sufficed for any expansion.
