I knock and say, " sorry to bother you, do you need a window cleaner?" If no, then i say thank you, please take my card, if you ever change your mind please give me a call. If they say yes, i chat to them for a few mins and take detales and move on to the next door. All new customers i do the day I canvassed.

Nice one Alan, haven't spotted you traveling around for a bit ... i'm solely canvassing now for other window cleaners and done well in  setting up rounds. There's plenty of work out there.

Hope the round is going well mate.
Where am I knocking today?

Canvassing is rubbish! You should all go out and leaflet for hours on end or pay people to deliver them for you for £60 odd per 1000 leaflets which is a bargain as you will on average get 1/2 enquirees per 1000 leaflets dropped.

It works for some people and works for others.   At end of the day Canvassing is not just knocking on door and saying 'Need your window cleanned'  you need to make a wee reason why they need there windows cleaned.  such as 'I was cleaning your neighbours window and thought you might be interested'

Leafletting is much better coz canvassing is a rubbish way to build up a business. Canvassing only gets on average 1 in 20 doors id rather get 1 in 1000 doors and spend 100 times longer building up my business with spreadout uncompact customers and better still ill only do them 8weekly and charge 50 percent more but then need to spend another 10 years leafletting to gain the extra uncompact work that i need to fullfill my round.
Leafletting wins all day long... Taking ages to build up, costing loads of money to do so, work being uncompact and not having enough hours a day to finish a nice amount of houses for a full days work.
Canvassed rounds are just so lower class!!
having 3/4 jobs per road and only gaining 1 in 20 on a bad day and earning to much money then having to go vat registered because money just flys in far too quick where its too easy to get lots of work done and dusted from all the compact canvassing.

Trust me i know leaflets are miles better.

In the early days I dropped hundreds of leaflets and not got a single customer.
Canvassing is the best way to build a round. It has the benefit also that you find out where other window cleaners are working and where they are not. Also you don't want houses here there and everywhere as you waste to much time inbetween, you want them grouped. Also you want to cherry pick houses and not bother with ones that are hard to access the rear when the owners are out to work.
If the round is big enough it generates it's own customers. I only canvas now if I want to break into a new estate. My unwritten rule is 6 new customers on a new estate gets the ball rolling for more.
I'm dropping advertising in village mags etc now as it's too expensive for what I get out of it.

You get a better rate for 1:20 houses than 1:1000.    I must admit sometimes canvasing work and sometimes leaflet drops working however I perfer doing 50/50 as I knock and if no answer than leave a leaflet.

People are getting paid £60 per 1000 thats actually better than I knocked in today on the doors, really up against it with all the £4 whole house mania I had. You know what forget knocking who wants their leaflets dropped ?
