Split charger (fuse)
« on: September 09, 2013, 06:37:59 pm »
Hi all

I'm fitting a split charger later this week to charge my battery.
The instructions say van battery-fuse-split charger-fuse-leisure battery.
Firstly, does it need 2inline fuses as i would have thought they both do the same job...?
Secondly, what size fuse would i need, ive brought 20amp fuses but think this may be to large?
My fault, i brought the split charger but like a numpty, didnt choose the option with the fuses and wires and so i'm off to maplins tomorrow!

Thanks for any help  :)

Yes, you should have a fuse on each battery.

We have 15amp fuses in ours. You also need to make sure that the electric cable is rated higher than the fuse, so ideally would be between 20 and 30amp. Fuses should be on each side of the split charge relay close to each battery.

I have just fitted one of those. Working very well. I used a 20 amp fuse the problem with a 30 amp wire ,its difficult to get and it costs a fortune.SO used 20amp wire and the same fuse and used a double 15 for earth.Personal I feel even a 20 amp is over kill. As far a batteries go you will find your batteries will have an increase life span as I have been told small loses in power will serve the battery better. One more thing try to get the battery`s base off the floor as a cold floor of you van, this will take its tole on the life span of the battery.
To all charging a battery on a floor e.g concrete floor get it off the floor and onto some thing warmer while and it will benefit it if it ran down a few times a month this goes for lead acid batteries. What also will kill a battery is over charging as this dries out even a sealed lead acid battery. Hope this will someone.

Thanks for your help all, to be honest ive ordered some 30amp auto wire from the net as recommended to me, and have 20amp fuses.
On the diagram it says have a wire from the leisure battery to the chassis for earthing, ive looked at the split and there is no negative port so i take it i need to do this?
Ive spoken to a mate this morning and hecsats he'll fit it so its more out of curiosity now ;)

Many thanks

30 amp wire is great and a 20 amp fuse is also fine. (The important thing is having the fuse rated lower than the wire).

I haven't got a wiring diagram infront of me, but from memory you have 2 inlet connections on one side and 3 on the other side.

One of those 2 connections is from the van battery and the other is to be an earth onto the van's chassis.

One of the 3 connections on the other side is for your leisure battery. The other will be for a caravan fridge (so will work the same way as your leisure battery connection - only live when the engine is running) and the third will be live all the time.

You also need an earth wire to the van's chassis from your leisure battery.
