Pay Increases
« on: August 25, 2013, 08:08:28 am »
Hi everyone.

Just wondering about staff pay increases.

1. How often do you increase their wages?
2. How much do you increase their wage by?
3. Would you increase your employed staff wages by more than the self employed part-timers?

Thanks in advance.  :)

What would be fair is a increase of the inflation rate per year plus a percent or two. The inflation rate is bout 2.8% so I would say 4%/5% is fair.

I suppose I should add that we are based in the Midlands, they are picked up and dropped off and are out 7 hours with a full hour for dinner. Working time is 6 hours, but even in that is travelling time between jobs. They are on £70 a day.

It depends how the business is going.

I've kept hourly rate the same over two years but the monthly/quarterly bonus has improved with the amount of work we do... so instead of a possible £100 a month/£300 a quarter it is now £100 a month/£400 a quarter.

So when employee started target was at a lower level and so was the bonus. Target improved and so has the bonus. I see us having an improved bonus in the summer quarters next year or see below.

If a conny or gutter or one off commercial job comes along that I don't want to be involved in (lazy git  ;D) I might say do this one on your day off (4 days a week remember) and you can have 70/75% of the money as a bonus instead of wages. (Usually works out at £15/20 per hour for him for that one job) But it doesn't count towards the monthly/quarterly bonus.

With a very trusted employee you may offer use of the van privately or at least take home at night (tax and insurance implications, mind).

It's a game of three halves!

thats paying well over the odds in my opinion . however in your line of work they may be truly sloggin their guts out every day ? in which case your pay rate might be about right

Interesting mate. I'm gonna be away for nearly 3 weeks. I'm wondering how to reward the lad left in charge if he gets all the jobs done. Your £100 is a good idea. That's virtually a day and a halfs wage for him. He's gotta be happy with that.

Moving forward, I'm not sure whether an annual pay increase is expected or not? ???

Lol!  ;D They don't slog their guts out everyday mate believe me! Doing this: http://www.solar-panel-cleaners.com/british-gas-use-clean-solar-solutions-ltd-for-solar-panel-cleaning-at-toyota-derby is a lot different than riding around the beautiful countryside doing a few of these: http://www.solar-panel-cleaners.com/solar-panel-cleaning-on-3-solar-sites-for-willey-estate-shropshire

I know they don't have it bad, I think they know it too. But in their minds come the new year, will they be expecting a pay increase do you reckon?

Hi Steve,

If you didn't feel the need to increase the hourly rate what about bringing in a bonus system (we use an attendance and quality of work scheme) so they can earn more? Or how about giving them an extra days holiday or two??

Never argue with an idiot, they will only bring you down to their level, and beat you with experience

ive only employed the last 2 or 3 yrs properly and pay increases have not ever come into my mind. the beach town i live in is a bit depressed and not known  for pay increases in living memory . i reckon i will  increase the pay by £1 per hour after im totally off the tools , another year away i think . sounds to me like you are overegging the omelette with your generosity Steve ,dont get taken for a ride

£12 is plenty enough for cleaning! Its a min wage job in my eyes.
i must be a right tight arse then as i only pay 25% of whats done by the end of the week which works out £8-10 ph. I wouldnt be paying no £12 ph and thinking of increasing it also!!! No way pedro. They are on a good number there steve.

I pay minimun wage plus bonusses.

so when minimun wage goes up so does their pay.

i would never give a pay rise without increasing their responsibilities or their workload.

for instance i added a bonus of £100 a month because i upped his day workload from £300 - 350, then again when it went up again.

Is that for a 1 or a 2 man team?  are they required to hit the target every day and what happens if they miss it?

Fair play to that.
Wish I could get £350 a session off 1 man
Would save you well over a grand per van per 4wks :o
That's 1 clean every 16 mins at our average price ,inc van moves etc etc

Fair play that man ;)
