Hi

What causes the white deposits, and what is the best way of removing so they don't come back.

Regards

Alex

Its efflorescence. Hydrochloric acid will shift it. Kev will give you to full cause buts due to moisture and salts seeping out and solidifying. Very difficult to stop it.

As matt says it is efflorescence.  It needs three things to manifest itself salts, water and a route.  Take anyone of those away and there is no efflorescence.  Easily removed usually with a wash of Phosphoric Acid sometimes if the salts have calcified you need to manually scrape most away and then apply Phos Acid to finish off.  Aqua Mix then do a product called Aqua Mix Eff-Ex which is a cleaner but also a penetrating fluid that forms a membrane sub surface and helps prevent re-occurrence depending on how bad it is.

The main thing is to investigate thoroughly and find out if there is a new source of salts or water causing it.

Thanks very much for the reply.

I didn't fancy just using pressure to clean it, I wanted a slightly longer lasting solution.

Thanks for the reply's

What we have is a gateway to either a private estate or very large dwelling.

I would offer to clean the entire structure, including cap stones, avoiding the lights electrics and what looks to be a camera on the right hand side, These could be bagged, whilst cleaning.

I would then follow the topic advice as far as resolving the effervescing. I would further up-sell a maintenance package so that it could look its best, ongoing ;D

There's an opportunity there that would be stupid to ignore!

It certainly isn't anywhere in Crosby, although with the new website, fingers in money lending, chemical supply chain and all the websites you have going on - it could be your driveway!

I feel it possibly isn't because anyone with all that going on doesn't have a battered phone screen that makes viewing pictures off the forum difficult to the point where you get the response completely wrong.

I'm back as well ;) - goodnight

I am working on a new phone..but all the modern touch screen ones are not waterproof or dustproof. I buy a case to make it so it will be the size of the first Motorolas!
Was not the far away ...still a sandstone just the wrong continent.

I have zoomed in on the picture big time. I agree that there is no damp course, though I can't be as certain as Chris but a lot of what is going on there has nothing to do with rising damp (oooeeerrrr Rigby).

It has everything to do with salts coming out of the structure and i agree with Chris that it is the atmosphere that the gateway is in, overhanging trees keeping the whole area away from sunlight and so it is damp.

A good clean and seal will sort all the problems out and as I posted before there will be a real opportunity to up sell
