HF-5 4040 in the bin after 2 years.
« on: July 01, 2013, 10:05:18 pm »
Would have hoped to get another year out of my HF-5 4040 but this one is ripe for the bin.

Have regularly replaced pre-filters, stuck closely to the filter replacement lifespan (40,000L) which works out about every 2 months for me. Daily 5-10 minute flushes before operation. TDS in is around 279ppm.

Thought it could have been the internal o rings failing, so replaced those but still very high TDS coming out, been like this for a little while now.

I would have imagined a softener would prolong the membrane life, but what's cheaper, replace it every 2 years, or put up with cost of re-gen salts and softener resin and hopefully get a bit more out the membrane......

Started creeping up slowly up til 70 where it's at now. When new it was around 10-13 which wasn't too bad considering the low pressure I get here. Gaps time.

How much water do you use per week though?
Dave.

Check if the inside of the 4040 housing is slippery/slimy.  If it is, you have bacterial contamination and you'll need to bleach out the whole system as otherwise if you simply replace the membrane you'll lose it soon.

Posted from bitter experience.  I lost one in about four months.  Twice in a row.

I use about 500L a day of pure, 63/37 waste/pure ratio.

When I renew an membrane I always bleach out the housing. There wasn't any slime present. :)

would it not cost you around about the same money to go double DI only? you keep forking out for membranes,RO,higher water bills due to waste water etc.

it would be interesting to see how much you spend in a year on water production.

DI only is so easy and fast.mind you my tap tds is only 30-35 tds.maybe you would spend a bit more but a lot less hassle and fast.
price higher/work harder!

spend a bit more? tds 279 ppm, even with a double DI, it would cost him a fortune every month on resin.
