My last pair of Brasher hillmaster boots were poor - the soles are completely smooth now and they are always damp inside. I think I paid about £130 for them a year ago and for a full on hikers boot they were crap to be honest.
Anything else?

ive tride alsorts of boots ive had dear ones and cheep they aint much differance when it comes down to the sole wearing out i wont buy expensive walking boots.think about it hikers may only uses them a few hours now and then. but us guys all the time so they are gonna fail rapidly its one of those things

Best boots I've used were Berghous Ridgemasters but the soles split and so did the uppers, Hitecs coated with some fantastic waterproof coating lasted two weeks before they leaked, I've had all the cheap £30 ones from the factory shop (crap) and now Brashers equally crap. I have some Ecco Yak leather boots for general wear but they are like ice skates in the wet and leak too.

Two year's daily use out of my last pair.  Not a drop of water inside ever unless it ran down my legs into them.

Safety toecap and a steel plate in the sole for when you step on that plank with a nail in it.

And, by the way, the only reason they gave up after two years was a silly air thing in the heel breaking - the soles were still pretty much perfect bar that.

I had a pair of steel toe caps once, I wore them in the snow. Within an hour I was back, my toes were like ice.

They look good.
Bargain price aswell if they are genuine Goretex.
The waterproof membrane/lining in clothing and shoes is usually graded according to it's quality, because the membrane quality does vary through the production process.
Military and Medical applications are always graded as the highest quality.
So the army boots, if genuine, should be really good.

I wore these to a particularly wet T in the Park. I never took them off the entire weekend. When I got home the only part of me that was clean and dry were my feet.

Also they last ages.

You can get toe warmers with the boots .

The boots look really good i will be buying some as i have gone through 3 pair of apparently waterproof boots in 6 months ,

The pick of the bunch were Geox boots which lasted the longest until they started cracking but only paid £15 for them out of Tkmaxx normal rrp was £90.00  . The others were Karrimor's will never buy again . Mike

Not a problem for me, but I do live on the soft southern jessie south coast - I wear them with black army socks from Silvermans ( http://tinyurl.com/l3c3a96 ) - feet were the warmest bit of me all winter (though I am one of those silly b*ggers who wears shorts all year round so that's perhaps not saying much). 

Whatever boots you wear, these are the best socks to be wearing (in my opinion, of course).

I've been wearing these cheap walking boots for work for a couple of years now. First pair lasted nearly 18 months which is good value imo. On my second pair now. Comfy, warm and dry.

The thing about walking boots is that they are deigned to be worn off road and therefore the soles are designed for grip on softer surfaces and not as hard a compound rubber as some.

I'm jumping in after the event here I know, but I think they will be a great boot.

I wear North Face boots, £130.00, breathable, goretex, vibram sole. They are brilliant. They have lasted me 3 winters and are still in excellent condition. My feet are always dry and warm, even when I worked this winter in 5 inches of snow day after day. When I put them on in the morning they were damp from the day before, but still they didn't let the water in.

They are comfy, durable and unless I work on different terrain to 8weekly, I spend most of my working time on soft surfaces, such as grass.

I reckon Dave has bought the berghaus version of the boot I choose to wear and I reckon he will find they will last for years to come. Nice one Dave.

P.S. Buy good quality spray-on waterproofing and spray them copiously monthly. Boots generally leak because people never waterproof them properly.

  well, although I like Straus clothing, I don't like steel toe caps or buying something I don't know will fit. Doc Martins were lethal on wet grass years ago so I won't buy them either. North Face looked really good but £40 more. The stockists all have much the same ranges with set prices. I offered to buy two pairs if they knocked some money off but they wouldn't play.
