removing anti-graffiti coating and paint.
« on: June 13, 2013, 05:36:33 pm »
A client has a K rend wall.
There was graffiti on it so they painted over it.
Then they placing an anti-grafffiti coating over it
They then decided to paint the whole wall a different colour. But of course the new paint didnt take over the anti-graffiti coating.
They now want the whole wall one colour.

Any idea?
Can you remove anti-graffiti coating from K rend successfully?
Have you had success removing masonry paint from K rend?- I have found paint can not usually be completely removed from K rend.

There is a bloke who comes on here that has just bought a wet volcano grit chucker ( the names have been changed to protect the innocent ) that would be perfect for this job and he might even train you up on it so that you also have one up on the big green eyed smartsmudge dealer

Is it a sacrificial coating? Do they still have the tin or name of the product they used?

Chris

What are you talking about?  A sacrificial coating is a coating which is designed to take a battering to protect a coating or sealer below!!!!  How does this even come in to the equation in this instance???

er no its not Kevin, when you remove graf from a sacrificial coating you also remove the sacrificial coating hence its name. Sac coatings are therefore far easier to remove then perm coatings - Possibly the reason for the Q .... experts   ::)roll

You've got the K rend, graffiti layer, anti graffiti layer, paint layer. I would say that needs stripping off because whatever you do it is going to look a right mess.

I do have the system that Carl has mentioned but it might be worth having a word with someone local, seeing what they can do and offering a paint job to tidy it up at the end.

We have cleaned K rend, several times with the pressure washer and not had problems but never had anything like that to contend with.

Keep us posted

I understand where you are coming from now!  My mistake I never realised it was referred in this terminology regarding graffiti.   I was referring to a different terminology of sacrificial coating.  A sacrificial coating to me is when a Topical sealer is laid or several layers and then a higher shine topical sealer is put over the top.  This is the layer that wears or gets damaged and therefore it is the only layer that needs replacing instead of having to replace the two or three layers underneath so it is the sacrificial coating.  Or if you want to grout a very porous floor when you have fixed it you apply a coating of sealer and then grout and therefore when you clean off you take the seakler off as well that has prevented grout from impregnating the stone this can also be termed sacrificial.

I can clean the K render, that's not a problem. It's the removal of the anti-graffiti coating from the K rend that is the problem really.

So you think using the farrow system is best do you?
Would that remove the paint and coating that has soaked into the porous render though?

I am not having a laugh and I told you what I thought to the Fluoropolymer.  It is OK but so are many other sealers!

Richy,

If the anti graffiti coating is permanent & not sacraficial then contact the makers of the coating. they will have something to get it off or at least know of a removal product. failing that you could use a paint stripper. Im not sure of the makeup of krend so i dont know if paont stripper would damage it, but i know the stuff we use will take off paint/coatings/graffiti/sealers/ amongst other things. Its pricey and full ppe is a must.

I keep looking in at this one.

I think it probably could, I am away next week. Going to Santorini for the week and we are already very busy, with existing projects.

I don't think I would like to say yes, even if it was offered.

I want to clean the wall outside my unit, which is block that has been painted. I was hoping to get on with that this afternoon.

That would have given me an idea of times etc but I have had to sort two vehicle insurances out and now have three invoices to write, so I don't see me getting to play with the machine till after I get back.

If the job can wait and it is an option, I will discuss with you, on my return

Graffiti magic is like liquid silicone/rubber mix on a soft substrate... blasting is do-able but very tricky to get 100% off.
If all of it was not removed it will cause problems later for anybody recoating. Maybe calcium carbonate or Calcite or something similar.  Neither of those medias like the damp!
Best left alone.

I have  also cleaned k rend of new builds recently, it is a cement based material according to the site foreman from the job, also be careful if using your turbo as it can cut straight through it (like I did on the new build, left a hole where I over shot the brick lintel that I was cleaning the K rend off  ::)roll)

Are we all saying that the wall is knackered?

If it is then it would be easiest to get all the crap off the wall & have it skimmed, yes or no?
