Best way to get help.
« on: September 15, 2003, 01:20:24 am »
Whats the best way to take on a helper on a window cleaning round?  Can I take someone on a self employed base or should I put them on PAYE. What  the pros & cons? What about wet days when you cant work what about pay then. And what are the insurance. Any ideas would be great thanks.

I used to employ a guy that worked a regular night job, 4 on 4 off, I paid 35% of the take  cash in hand,
He used to give me 2 days a week , and that worked fine until he want to Australia.

i think a lot of window cleaners still have casual workers if its only 2 days a week and pay them cash in hand.my experience is i cannot be bothered employing anybody.too much hassle.its very difficult to get a good worker and if u do he,ll soon start up on his own.

i knew a window cleaner  once who had dole boys working on the side for him(3 of them!).2 of them up ladders!madness! ::) :-\anyway one fell off and severely damaged his leg.this WC gave him 10grand cash to shut him up as he wanted compo for working illegally :o ::) ::)

also a lot waste ur time.u have to go over their work and correct mistakes/too slow.leave gates open, stand all over peoples plants, weather affects whether u do any work, sometimes u get up and really cant be bothered with window cleaning etc.

unless u want a bigger business with all the extra hassle.i would stay on ur own and price better and keep honing ur round.depends on ur goals/aspirations.im much happier with a better priced smaller round with no help! ;D ;D
price higher/work harder!

also the flexability with not having a employee to worry about(or sack!) ;D.is another reason why i like working for myself!no fall outs,no wages to pay out after a on/off bad weather day.pack up when YOU VE had enough etc.also i tend to collect money at the end of  the working day for 20 mins sometimes.cant do that with an employee.u have to take him home then go back or just leave it till the end of the week!i know from experience!i earn more now with a smaller round on my own than i did with a helper and a bigger round!years ago i had 470 accounts on the books.much better now ive got 320.i sold some off 5 years ago.

it all depemds on how many days a week you will need them, if it is just a few days a month pay some one cash in hand,  if it is every day, PAYE,  but give them 0 hour contracts or a min of16 hours.  that way if they on 16 and want to go legit,  tax credits and that,  they get stuff,   and if theres no work you only have to pay them 16 hours wages

If you use someone who is not directly employed by you, then they will need to have all the relevant insurances otherwise you will end up liable for any damage etc.

Also, they will be responsible for their training, tax national insurance etc and so will have to find this out of the money you pay them.

It is far cheaper to take someone one on PAYE, especially if they are only part time.

The drawbacks are that you have to pay them sick pay, holiday pay, public holidays, regardless of the weather etc.  You also have to pay the extra insurances, training, H&S etc.  You will also need to monitor their quality of work as it will never be of the same standard as you would do it.

My advice;

- don't let the above put you off, but just make sure you are ready for the extra paperwork.
- don't try to do it 'on the sly' as if you get caught the consequences can be severe
- make sure you can afford to pay them week in week out as YOU get paid second once you take on an employee
- talk to your accountant and make sure that they are confident you can afford it as they will be the ones who have to help you pick up the pieces if it all goes pear shaped
- I am talking from bitter experience so this is not fanciful guesswork or supposition
- if it doesn't work out first time, don't let it stop you trying again.

Good luck, done right this will make you a lot of money I hope.

Kind regards

Andy

I simply dont know the point you get to...where you think.. right i need help....!

then i think no i dont , i dont want to part with my money yet.

i would really have to be earning a fantastic wage... to take a guy on ..and a pay cut....then build back up to be earning what i did alone !
