How fast does resin go off?
« on: May 27, 2013, 11:38:42 pm »
I last checked my tds about 4 weeks ago when it was at 0.
In that time I have only gone through about 1200 litres.
Imagine my shock today when the tds was 178.
I've got twin 11L di's on the van and my tds from the tap is 96.
In the past the tds has gone up steadily.
Any ideas?

Should last longer than that but if you are filling your tank with the tap on full your resin will be spent much quicker .

It takes over 6 hours to fill my 300 ltr static tank so i expect my one 11 ltr di to last about 12 weeks or more . Mike

I've has the resin a long time so I'm happy with it's lifespan I'm just surprised it went from 0 to 178 so quickly, I thought it would rise gradually.
I pump the water through the di's to the reel.

How the hell can your TDs be 178 after coming out of the tap at 96.Some`s not right with all that.Mate

I know, only thing I can say is I'm surprised its lasted as long as it has because I've had it a long time I keep checking it expecting it to rise and it stayed at zero the whole time.
I'm confident the TDS meter is working ok though because the reading from the tap has stayed constant.

I'm thinking the resin has somehow decayed causing the tds
to rise so quickly

That is normal in my experience. The resin 'collects' impurities. You get a gradual rise to about 10-15 them boom it runs to 100s

My tap TDS is 50-60, I have seen it coming out at more than 200 through 'spent' resin.

This makes no sense to me. It should be impossible for resin that has fully absorbed all the ions etc it can to put out more than what goes in to it. If that really is the case i would not consider spent resin as the culprit. I would consider a bacterial or algae growth in the water system. I would flush and cleanse/disinfect the whole system before refilling with any resin.

It does happen you need to check the TDS of the first vessel not just the last vessel.  I have TDS about 90-100 out of the tap and was shocked to find the TDS out of the first vessel was about 160!!!!!
Was still 0 out of the last one though but not for long - think that is your answer.
