Too High TDS (new ro)
« on: May 25, 2013, 08:50:01 pm »
My brother has just set up a new ro and after lots of flushing its pumping out 015 tds before di. Now I have looked at the system and all looks right and hes not far from me,my ro is 005 tds before di. I don't think alls right here and hes phoned up the supplier who has told him this is about right,if its about right whys mine 005 ,suppliers telling porkys me thinks...

What do you think, before I start blabbing names!

Mines doing really well to produce 15ppm before DI...think the supplier is right.
I've had it at 9ppm before but that was with different membranes - same manufacturer/supplier, different batch.
So many variables - mains water TDS, water pressure, temperature etc etc.

I have been using mine in the same area for 7 yrs ,never been that high.
I took his tds before ro and its the same as mine.
Maybe im just lucky, but never have I had it at 015

Is the water pressure the same?
You are lucky to have it coming out at 5ppm - you wouldn't even need DI if you didn't want  8)

They can vary quite a bit I think the performance can be from 92% - 98%.  If the tap water feeding both is the same then the pressure could be the problem, is that the same? A higher pressure will bring the reading from the membrane down.

everything is set up the same.
Booster pumps on both units both set up the same.
Both units in brick out buildings with the same TDS water into the ro.
The only thing that is different is his unit makes 015 water at twice the speed of mine.

@mattstanley
I don't use a Di  ;D

maybe his pressure is slightly lower and u have the waste tap closed to much, open it slightly u may find the tds will drop.

you have to set the optimum setting for the RO in the conditions its working in. what about the amout of water flow out the tap? is different from from pressure,
Dave.

To me, a tds of 15 seems well within the spec of any ro.

Just chant..... Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare, Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare. It's beats chanting Tory Tory or Labour Labour.

yeah but how many litres of water is coming out of your tap per min without any pump? thats what im saying, then the pump is pumping up to  80 psi and but there is not enough water coming out of the tap starves the membrane of water. It could not be that but it may be.

also how far is the RO from the tap source? the further it is the lower the pressure falls in the hose pipe or what ever is connected to the input.
Dave.

I've just replaced the pre filters on mine for a Fibredyne one, and changed the resin in the DI vessel, unfortunately its the most expensive filter on mine that needs changing, from the tap i'm getting around 280ish TDS, after RO its only coming down to around 50, believe it should be around 5-15TDS

Thats not very good at all, 50? you will be eating resin you need to look at what is causing the problem asap

Yep, not great, flushed the RO for a couple of hours earlier but it hasn't made any difference!
