I got a problem and need help:(
« on: May 07, 2013, 08:47:25 am »

I live in a property very similar to that. I live on the first floor with only very few parking spaces in the front. It is often occupied so I can't always park it right in front of the property.

My driving test in on the 12th of may so as soon as I pass my test, I want to get a van and whatever else is necessary is start the window cleaning business.

My question is, how can I get water if I can't always park it in front of the property? i guess I just have to negotiate a deal with local businesses to see if its ok to use their taps.

My other problem is that I want to install the OS system inside the van. How long would it take me to fill up a 450 litre tank? Someone mentioned to me that I need a system that uses electricity otherwise it forever.

Myabe I need to hire a garage with energy supply and it is big enough to fit my van?

Regardless of tap tds you're not really going to be able to produce water in your van somewhere like that
Hoses and waste water will be too much of a problem to overcome in my opinion
A few other options would be
- can you produce water in a nearby relative or friends garage in exchange for free window cleaning and something towards water bill
- maybe enquire about sharing a lock up with local windie, can you afford your own lock up if you're only just starting out
Find out if you can buy water from local cleaner. You won't be using too much if you don't have a full round

Fortunately I have never had this problem but I'm sure there are guys on here that have and can probably give you some other suggestions aswell
Thanks,

Can you not produce the water in the flat? A friend does just this as he lives in a flat. If there is no space close enough to the flat when he gets home, he waits until the morning until there is a space close enough to run a long hose to his van to fill from his static.

Unfortunately no because it is a small flat and no space to park close. I don't know what to do now ??? ???

Ideas help!

Could you not put a shed at a friends or family members house, and come to an agreement on paying for part or all of their water bill to help you out?

You could set up a small system in your bathroom and fill some tanks which you then
could carry to your van.
Enough to do the upper floors only trad the bottoms.
Once your making enough money hire out a lock up with tap.
A dealer should be able to advise you on the best system for your needs.
With a bit of hard work there is always a way. Best of luck.

I'd have twin DI's in the van and fill up from customers taps. The most it would cost in resin is about a quid per 25 ltrs.

If you are carefull it's surprising how little you can get away with and still get perfect results.

to be honest i cant see it working because the fact u will have trailing hose on path and it will take a while to fill as well like a long time u might be able to get booster pump to make it a bit quicker i wouldn't bother looking into it yet i would start of by hand and then move house then when you get busy then think about wfp it cost a lot of money to but it is a fun with wfp and quicker but u do need parking and space.

One way round it would be to use a trolley system, with removable 25 litre containers, and carry the containers out to the pavement in the morning, then drive the van round and load them up.

I live in a flat 14 floors up in a tower block with a 200 yd walk to the car park which involves 2 flights of steps after going down in the lift.

Whilst there is an outside tap in the car park that I use ordinarily, during the very cold weather, I had to make pure water indoors and take it down to the van 2 barrels at a time on a trolley as I didn't want the merlin RO in my van to freeze over night.

It was a pain each night but I managed ok.

A merlin RO works fine off mains pressure so it can be used indoors with no booster pump. It takes about 25 minutes a barrel. With a booster pump, less than that at about 15 minutes.

thank you all so much, seriously, this thread helped me so much. Unfortunately for me I failed my test 2 weeks ago but will do it again after a month.

I probably have to start with traditional method at first until the round gets build up. I will then have bit more money and maybe I can go somewhere with off street parking. Does the RO system take lot of space?

Funny enough, my mother has offered to buy me a house in London. The problem is that houses with off street parking can be bloody expensive. A house with a garage will definitely help.

ouch, thats hardcore. It goes to show that there's a will then there's a way. How big are your barrels? Why don't you move to somewhere else?

So if your mum is prepared to buy you a house in London why wouldn't she be prepared to rent you a small lock up to you get on your feet would be a hell of a lot cheaper

Don't worry about water production to start with - I'm  sure you'll be able to buy some pure water fairly locally.

Line up a vehicle, basic system and water supplier - and then go and get some customers first.

Forget cleaning windows get ya mum to buy you two or three houses up north for the same price as one in london. Live in one rent the other one or two out and live off the rent coming in.
