Resin question.
« on: April 29, 2013, 05:30:34 pm »
Last time I refilled my 11ltr vessel, I only had enough resin to half fill it.

Anyway, forgot to order resin and noticed today that it had crept up to 5, so got on the blower and ordered some today. iIt lasted just over a month mind :D )

My question is, when the resin arrives, would it benefical to keep the half full vessel of resin, and just top up with new?

Considering the bag is 25 ltr, my vessel is 11 ltr, it would pan out quite nicely.

What you reckon?

i WOULD NOT DO THIS AS YOUR RESIN WOULD ONLY LAST A SHORT AND NOT GIVE YOU A TDS OF OOO.

of course it will give you 000

yes topping up will not last as long as a complete change but will give you 000

judging by the time taken to reach 005 then it will be another month before it returns to 005

My thinking is that if I top up the resin this time, using 5 ltrs, I will then have 2 x 10 ltrs in stock for future use.

Either wait for your Tds to rise then renew,or put 5ltrs on top. Personally I'd top it up

He's now got the dilemma of deciding which of your three different answers is actually the correct one

what makes you think their is a wrong answer ?

top up - will give you 000 tds
empty and refill to top = 000 tds ( but throwing away good resin )
empty and 1/2 fill as already been done still gives you 000

as op has said 1/2 fill then 2 fills is an exact bag full - personally i like to have a spare 5ltrs in reserve
in case the suppliers is out of stock then you than do an emergency top up/half fill

There is no wrong answer,he could even go down the route of getting a second di.

Your second paragraph puts you in the same dilemma as the original question. It's all about preference and how much resin you wish to waste/use.

no if he's got 25 ltrs, he can top up the resin this time, using 5 ltrs,  then have 2 x 10 ltrs in stock for future use. Good idea  ;)

What you reckon?

This is why you need two DI vessels.

Lets say your input tds is 20, the old resin still removing 15ppm. Why throw that away? Might as well put that to good use, put that as the first vessel, then the second vessel (full of fresh resin) only has to remove 5, instead of 20.

When the TDS creeps up again, swap the vessels around, and put fresh resin in the last one. Resin lasts much longer this way. Give the 5ppm vessel a good shake as well, then pound it vertically on the pavement a few times.
