Hi lal,
I am old school in many ways. I am 100% trad, and picked up work initially by canvassing. Lately I have picked up more by word of mouth recommendation, but I still have to canvass occasionally (did a couple of hours this afternoon). I prefer canvassing to leaflet drops because a) I prefer meeting people face-to-face and b) it's the quickest way to get customers.
I started up in August 2011 after moving from England, so I am 20 months in now, and currently have 372 customers, about half of which are regular(ish), and the rest phone me as and when.
It is definitely harder to get good, reliable, regular customers these days. In England it was much, much easier to build a decent run. I believe that flexibility is key, as not everyone wants to see us every month, and I believe that as long as you are making money from even periodical customers, they are worth having. The really hard bit, I have found, is spotting the difference between these and the messers.
Any other tips I can pass on, please ask away.
Regards,
John
