Today I had a small gutter and window clean job to do this morning. I parked in the road alongside the house and led the microbore out from the van. Across the pavement. Put my two signs out that declare 'WINDOW CLEANING IN PROGRESS'.

Started to crack on with the job.

All of a sudden I looked round after hearing a crash-bang-wallop behind me.

A girl, aged about 12 had fallen off her bike after riding into my window cleaning signs. She apologised, put the sign back upright, I asked her if she was okay and we all carried on as if nothing had happened.

Would it be worth having the back of your van emblazoned with warnings, similar to those you see on the back of ice cream vans?

Go one further, add 'stop me and buy one (window clean)'.

I am already wearing my coat. Seriously, good that all is well, unless she tells her parents and they come looking for you.

Its not what your insurance company would want to hear if a claim was made against you. If you have cones etc out your covered, if you dont your not. Essentially.

Would the insurance co react differently to tripping over the warning sign to if they tripped over the hose? The warning signs always seem ridiculous to me if I am honest in that they are a genuine trip hazard whereas a hose is not as long as it is flat on the floor.

We put warning signs ever 10M ISH along hose and at any pathway the public could walk through
Average built man walks through and trips over warning sign  falling to the ground  cutting his knee and hand
Tells us he will sue us  Which he did
 I believe we lost the case  60 to 40 as his side made the case that as we moved from window to window
the hose moves and took his eye of where he was walking
thank god all our H S was in place as I no someone who got paid out just under £16000 for the same type off thing  (different trade) WHO HAD NO H S in place

Interesting story.
I don't do much commercial, mostly domestic. But I make sure that I can see the hose crossing the path as I pull it. I never pull it blindly, like when I am around the back of the house and just pull it without checking if someone is walking past the house. So as it is never moving as I clean each window.
Better to be safe.
Apparently so a friend who used to be a health and safety checker on site (he worked for an insulation company and would randomly turn up to check if H &S practices are being followed) he recond that we should by rights put a cover over the hose as it crosses the path hence no hose visible on the path to be absolutely H&S correct. But very difficult to do,for us.... Even more kit to carry , unload and load ....
