« on: March 12, 2013, 07:23:01 pm »
good question i havent seen before what made you decide and want to work as a carpet cleaner ?

i started self employment back when i was 19 i was made redundant from a double glazing firm to which i had to claim benefits for 2 weeks and decided thats not the route for me so my ex partners mum fella was a cleaner so he said andy why dont you just go buy cheap ladder, small leaflet and a mobile so did all that and from day 1 i was in work was amazing so it grew big and fast for me then accident happend fell from ladder put end to getting up ladder again so with the money i earnt i thought why not try carpet cleaning so went in for courses etc brought prochem galaxcy machine and carried of from there with no previous experience or anything self taught alot of stuff and has done me so well over the years just a shame its now so hard. but thats basically my part sorry for going on

how old are you know andy? you started with a galaxy have had many changes of machines over years? how long did your galaxy last you?

i started because i was a window cleaner and the mrs came home one night and said i know this guy from work selling a carpet cleaner (thinking she wanted it for house) then she said yeah hes retiring from cleaning offices with it (my ears pricked up then)
so agreed to see him and machine was impressed with demo and instruction and price. so it became an add on - now it is growing to nearly half my work at times. to be honest i really quite enjoy it.

I was a TBM read an Ashbys Advert Fortunes to be made. And an Ashcombe one If you are not in you cannot win it.  Also talked to their boss Lloyd Owen Also talked to Ron Tilley and I think it was Derek from NCCA .
Anyway I thought there must be something in this Carpet Cleaning game . I did delay for a few years because when I called in at Ashcombes on the way back from a business meeting in my suit an mohair coat the salesman said i did not look like a Carpet Cleaner and probably best if I did not do it.

A mate of mine cleaned caravans on haven site and thought about doing carpets but as dry as possible he found Dry fusion i trained on the day and worked the caravan sites for him then it was hit and miss for work so i bought a setup off him and went my own way Glad i did this is my 3rd year though and still finding it hard to find work day in day out i've just got a rhino water extraction so have a decent setup i'l just keep plugging away and do the best i can as everyone has said before don't go on price i'e £20 a room i'm gonna base myself on quality at an affordable price and turn work away even though i need it if they don't want to pay and from £35 a room i'm not to expensive Especially when i use the DF to agitate then the rhino then dry pad after with heat. I also have the dry fusion setup at more if thats what they want.

Started completely by accident. Had recently separated and was looking at seven weeks holiday on my own ( was working as a college lecturer ) and was wandering around a building site in Glasgow city center when I was approached by four individuals who asked what I was doing.

I said I was looking at a number of similar sites with a view to offering maintenance to the landscaped areas. One of the four asked if I also offered cleaning services ................for some reason I said yes and within two years I had a substantial business with 14 contracts around Glasgow...

Carpet cleaning became part of the business and the part I retained when giving the rest away !!!!!

Yeah after five years of blood sweat and tears.  ;D
It's not expensive, you just can't afford it.

Someone charged me £80 for cleaning a carpet 15 ft by 24 in 1980 in a residential home we had started.
He had Rod Copes number on a sticker on his machine so I went to see Rod and bought my first machine which is still in use.
If he had charged me a reasonable rate he would have had jobs nearly every week.
God must love stupid people---He made so many.
