window cleaning / bin cleaning business
« on: March 07, 2013, 06:59:02 pm »
While out working to day i see a bin cleaning van working away which got me thinking.

I have always wanted to get a bin cleaning van setup once i have a ready customer base ( three vans doing windows only )

But what about teaming up with a bin cleaning business they charge me a discounted rate they bill me one lump sum  and not the customer and i charge my customer the full price then once i have enough work buy a van and do it myself.

Whats your thoughts on this does anyone else offer a similar service that they don't do and just sub the work out ?

Get a trailer to fit on the back of your van m8!
Im hoping to get a bin cleaning set up in the next few months!
Ive been looking for a trailer, theres 1 VIP franchisee around my way and charges £4.50 per bin,i found out from someone the otherday.
I was going to charge £3 a bin but after hearing that i think i would charge slightly higher.
Get yourself a canvassing team to hit all the areas you want and send leaflets out with the benefits of having your bins cleaned and sanitised.

Takings off all first cleans till march 7th 2014
October  total=  cleaned  extra per month
November = cleaned extra per month
Total £  so far.

Funny enough im building up a customer base for wheelie bin cleaning verey soon. An area where i clean has been given the go ahead to green and brown bins over 50 percent of my existing customers want theres done every month. Im not sure weather to set up the bin cleaning myself orto sell the customers to an existing, £4 a bin x2 for each house on top of £10 window clean it would make sence to do it. Need to speak to a wheelie bin cleaner to see what the crack is with it all.

I know a bloke he's charging £2 a bin.
He knows the days and approx times of all bins being emptied in his area.

Are people really going to pay £4 x 2 bins x twice per month = £32 per month just to have their bins cleaned. I don't believe they would.

Our local guy charges £1.50 per week and seeing him follow the bin wagon around around doesn't make me want to set up to compete with him tbh.

Don't know what the law is in UK ref what gear you need to have to do the job of cleaning bins, but here, the guy who does it (or did it) where we are spent over 15K on the gear on the back of his Pickup. He charged about 3.50 a bin and you have to follow the bin wagon about so the custies can leave their bins out for you to clean. Before some guys get the idea about undercutting some other geezer, what happens if some other geezer undercuts you??

While you were driving around with the water tank for cleaning bins, you could also offer to water people's lawns. Or flower beds. Or maybe start up a dog walking add on by tying the dog leads to the back of your van while driving from bin to bin.

As an alternative, why not try this really strange idea of getting more customers who want their windows cleaned?

Ah, my wife just pointed out something none of us have thought of that we could add on to bin cleaning. If you have old biddies who can't get about too well, you could offer to do supermarket deliveries as you pass by with your van towing the bin cleaning trailer with the dog leads tied to it!! Charge the old girls a few quid a drop, jobs a good'n.

Love the ideas we get on here  ;D

Why not offer different services?
Gives someone else a job in the long run whilst you sit back and keep the profits?

Who said anything about twice a month??. It would be monthly. And even if was twice a month where do you get £32 from £8x2 is £16.
Of course people will pay that as thats what i pay my bin cleaners £8 a month for my 2 bins as does everyone else on my road £1.50 you would have to do a lot of bins to warrent it. Im in this to make money mate nothing else.

Don't know where I got £32 tbh, maths fail on my part.  Point still stands about paying £16 per month to have bins cleaned. People wouldn't up here that's for sure. Guess it's 'grim up North'.

By the way, do people in UK have their bins cleaned all year round? Just wondering. The dog walking and supermarket runs for the old biddies would still be all year round though. So as you turn up to clean the windows and clean the bins, you can still drop off the shopping etc, and because you walk the dog for the custy, you won't have dog poo all over the place to drag your hose through!! Win / win situation. While you're there, why not carry a lawn mower in the back of the van, next to the shopping, and there's another service!! Move over Lord Sugar!

My brother tried it years ago and didn't last long. He came back stinking like you wouldn't believe. It's not so much when people have them done regular, but the first cleans as people haven't had them done for years. The spray of the jet wash he used covered him throughout the day and smell stuck with him for days! He soon gave up.
Where am I knocking today?

First of all, what's it got in common with window cleaning apart from the use of water?

Secondly, have you read this?

3. Managing washings from wheeled waste containers
Wheeled waste container washings (wash and rinse water) may contain detergents, disinfectants
and waste residues which can all cause pollution. Don’t carry out washing in an area that drains to
surface water drains. You must discharge the washings to either:

a foul sewer at a specified location at your own premises, with the agreement and
permission of your local Sewerage Provider

or

an on-site sewage treatment system that’s
designed to deal with this waste and where the
system’s treated effluent discharge is covered
by an environmental permit from us.

from http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/static/documents/Business/wheeled_waste_bin_cleaning.pdf

Still want to do it?

I'm with Chris P Bacon - you should be thinking of adding tree surgery while you're at it.  After all, some of your customers surely want their trees lopped, don't they?
