Don't know if anyone else does this but instead of taking them to the council tip, it's possible to get a bit from the scrap merchant. The one I went to pays £320 a tonne - which works out at about a tenner for two 85 amp batteries. Not much, but better than just dumping them for nothing at the council tip.
I've got a collection of old batteries from cars, motorcycles and leisure batteries, am going to start bringing one home from the tip everytime I take the garden rubbish too. When I have time I will remove the lead from them and melt it into ingots then weigh it in, the tip will get the empty battery cases back.
