OK - who's for guessing?
« on: February 15, 2006, 07:08:04 pm »
I posted this in another topic earlier today but thought it could possibly deserve a thread of its own............

Many years ago in the early 80's I was out learning to 'sell' cleaning with a guy who went on to become the Chairman of one of the BIG nationals.

I was always flabbergasted to find that almost every site we went to he could calculate the square meterage accurately without a tape measure or even pacing it out.

I begged him to tell me how he did it and he left me stewing for weeks.

Eventually he told me and I've never forgotten it to this day.............

I can now walk into a large open plan office area (and many other types of area too) and 99% of the time I can tell you EXACTLY what it measures.

A big pat on the back for the first person who can tell me what this guy taught me........................

That wouldn't give you the size of the area

You have to count something (windows, desks, doors) and then you would be able to estimate the size of the room, floor…

I'm not sure how counting windows and doors can give you an area ??????????????

But it really is SO simple

is it simple maths, like pacing around the length and width and multiplying to get paces, if you know how big your pace is you got the answer  ??? ???

You have to count perimeter first, then the size of the area

I can see this taking all night.............

A clue - you can't always do it but 99% of the time you can.

To estimate perimeter you would not have to move your finger

Is it the number of lights you rely on?

You're nearly there. You do, of course, have to know the perimeter dimensions to get the area but how do you get those exactly without a tape and without pacing.

I would estimate the number of doors I would be able to place alongside the wall

Nowt to do with doors or windows. Estimating the number of doors would still be a guess. This is spot on accurate.

I am not too sure, but I think that the size of one door is equal to one yard
