I use both...

if you can source a well maintained either machine they will serve you very well, the kirby is the better quality of the two and so i only tend to use this machine on the high quality carpets and rugs...
For everyday use the B36 is what i would call "industry standard", German build quality... every part can be replaced plus the performance is great as long as you only use it as an upright, using it on stairs with a crevis tool is a waste of time.. i just use a Henry for this.

If you have limited funds start with the Sebo...

i hav a sebo bs36 had it for years ,but thinking of renewing ,,either a new sebo or a kirby

BS46, just 'cos it looks a bit more different from the usual domestic machine - and it is a bit quicker.
