Well we are moving house next month and need new carpets in the new place

Thought I'd pop into united carpets to see what they had

All seemed to be polyprop

Also they advertised a 7 year guarantee

Salesman stated if I bought the underlay too then this guarantee covered wear

I asked if after 5 years I pulled the sofa out and there was obvious wear would this be covered? Well that won't happen he said, never seen what I was explaining in all his years!

I asked if he had any wool mix carpet, ooh don't buy that you can't clean it!

Not even a professional clean I asked?

No because it will shrink and be ruined!

I then introduced myself as a carpet cleaner, he went a bit pale and walked away

DFS are the best, ask them a question about how to clean the sofas,

if that guarantee is in writing and it says that it covers wear Buy the carpet

there is absolutely no way they will guarantee a carpet against wear

More profit in polyprop especially as he supplies underlay. I once lost a job cos the fitter advised a clean would
ruin the carpet, based on someones screw up no doubt. I don't tell fitters how to fit carpet!

I was in a local carpet shop with a decnt reputationi might add a few years ago and for some reason i ended up dicussing stain protection on carpets.


 A young man who knew every thing there is to know about carpets  :  " you cannot apply stain protection once the carpet is laid " he said. Oh whys that then? i asked   his answer, " we apply protector vefore they are fitted other wise they will shrink .

I'm surprised you guys are surprised. These people are minimum wage 9-5 and the previous week were selling washing machines in Comet. They will spout what they were told on their induction day and all they are concerned about is hitting targets and going home.

I remember walking around DFS when bicast leather came out, it looked nice and expensive and beacuse ofthis and the fact it was new the retailers had over inflated prices of the suites ( now its as cheap as chips cos its pooe) any way as im walking around i hear a salesman talking to a customers about a bicast he was trying to sell them. " its new out from Italy, one of the best leathers on the market, its so easy to clean not like all the other cheaper leathers out there and it is super strong and will last years" i had to smile as some of what he said was true but most was BS , especially the bit when he was trying to sell them their leather kit, because " you need to feed this leathermto keep it norished (lol) if you use are kit regularly the leather will go nice andnsoft overnthe years" lol i nearly wet myself.


A sales man is a sales man.

80/20 wool twist mate ,best carpet you can get imo bit more expensive but worth it .Have been supplying and fitting carpets for longer than I care to remember ,and it would take something remarkable to make me change my mind about this type of carpet . The guarantees usually say on the back of the samples  something like ,full warranty details are available from the company ,so I would ask to see them as there might be some surprises .As for guarantee of wear if their underlay is bought ,well how do they know the underlay wont be changed halfway through the life of the carpet hmmmmmm  .Yes the wear of a carpet is dependent on a good underlay ,but cant see a manufacturer sticking their neck out on that old chestnut.
Must admit there is more profit in selling an 80/20 than a cheaper polyprop though  .

Shading is the term used to describe the flattening and difference in appearance, all manufacturers say this is inherent in the product and as such is not covered by any guarantee. The definition of worn out would be the loss of pile rather the flatening.
Retailers use the same mark up across their carpets. So it is andvantagious to sell higher value items. They do put much higher margins on the gripper underlay and bars as generally speaking most people when looking for carpets will not take the price of the other items into consideration. 
I have retailed carpets for years and the only information you get about the products is from the people selling you the products. Most sales people never see the produsts they have sold so are unaware of how they will retain their appearance.
80 % wool carpets will retain their appearance a lot longer than synthetic.

I got Westex wool twist fitted inlounge , stairs etc . Very good quality , highly recommended. Even had a tour round the factory before I bought, very informative!
