He has to tell them because it is illegal to track someone without their consent. What year do you think it is? in this day and age weather you like it or not your workers have rights and if you decide to just "give him his P45" you may find yourself paying out damages if you don't give your worker his rights.

rubbish..your tracking the vehicle not the person
you do not have to give notice or discuss the employers are quite within there rights

Fair enough you are tracking the van try so when the van is not where it should be are you going to discipline it?
If you dont inform your employee you are invading his privacy

With your argument style youre going to fit in here just right.

In the thread - http://www.cleanitup.co.uk/smf/index.php?topic=163822.msg1369243#msg1369243 - that started all this I said "tell them".  Not because of any law but because its (a) the decent thing to do and (b) gives them the knowledge that they can no longer take the mickey.  Thats what hes trying to achieve, so not telling them would be counterproductive.

"Im fitting a tracker on your van.  This means Im going to be able to look at your journeys through the day. Here it is in writing."

Wow, that was hard.

Hi Richy, I bought one of the trackers from ebay a couple of years ago when 1 of my former workers was taking the P in the van.   I think they are a godsend for peace of mind but you do find yourself checking up a lot.

The one I had fitted is in a carrier bag in the garage as I scrapped the van in the end, If you're serious about getting 1 give me a quick buzz and we'll sort a fair price out for it.  By the way this runs by calling the number which calls off and send a sms straight back to you within 5 secs.  It was accurate to about 10 meters.

If going the tracker route then you may as well but a decent one trackers nowadays not only track the van they allow you to plan van maintenance as they record mileage, track your vans speed, plot fuel consumption, time van idling and alert you to route deviations. Newer trackers can all now be accessed through a smart phone a friend of mine who is a manager of a small haulage company has his vehicles tracked and his phone will alert him if-
His drivers are reaching their divers hours
His drivers are consistently exceeding the speed limit
Excessive idling
His drivers deviate by more than 5 miles of the planned route
His lorry's are coming up to service mileage
Any of his vehicles go to an employees house

As you can see he doesn't need to constantly spy on his workers when the tracker does it for him and all of his employees know if one of them alerts pop up and its not something planned through work their phone is going to ring and ask them to attend his office next time they are in the yard.

Thing is they are all well aware of the trackers etc but must be unaware that phones work in other country's because when we went on holiday in the first 2 days he got about 5 alerts and had to phone and warn his employees not to try and pull the wool just because he was on holiday and they would have to explain themselves once he returned.

the thing is tho i think 18 quid a month is cheap if for me your staff have been skiving for an hour a day 2 men in a van £14 per hour x 5 days is £70 this will soon cut down, also any unneeded journeys will be reduced, fuel consumption will reduce as i allow staff to take vans home which will be stopping.

its a cost of about 75p a day, your insurance will also come down another saving

i can see your need for trackers is different from mine. My vans all earn a percentage of the work that they do so if they are skiving they are not earning, they all come back to the yard at night except in special pre arranged circumstances. My need for a tracer is just to eep more in control of my business and to have a handle on where they are and when , cctv monitors there comings and goings at base but i would like to see how they plan their route daily as 2 of them use sat navs only and i suspect (though they will never admit) that they are doing more miles per day than they need to

Hide a cheap android phone in each van running my tracs. Check it each evening and youwill see the whole route taken that day.
