Annoying leak
« on: December 28, 2012, 10:23:44 pm »
I have a very small leak from the connector at the head of my clarke CBM240E. I have a brass thread 1" into the pump that I screw my JG 1/2" push fit connector into...........it's the brass thread into the plastic pump thread thats leaking. The leak is so small but so hugely annoying! Have tried increasing the amount of ptfe tape and even added some silicone gel to the thread but just can't completely eradicate the problem.
Any suggestions?

I had a problem like that and eventually removed all ptfe, cleaned the threads up and put a smear of Araldite on the threads, screwed it back in and left it to set. It hasn't leaked since.

I know that some manufacturers of stuff warn against this as it could cause the 'plastic' to deteriorate, so you do this at your own risk. The fitting I had the problem with was an NPT JG fitting into a BSP female brass fitting. In this instance I don't mind if the plastic breaks down as it is easily replaced.

I also didn't see any warning on the Araldite instructions about gluing restrictions, so just presume that some manufacturer is covering themselves for every eventuality.

Try vaseline first, see how that goes. Seriously.

I use a stuff that is used to seal gaskets on car engines.

It's called Red Hematite.

Just chant..... Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare, Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare. It's beats chanting Tory Tory or Labour Labour.

Is that still around? I used to use that stuff 45 years ago as a gasket sealer but haven't seen it for years. Brings back memories.  :)

Thanks for all the advice. I tried silicone lubricant grease over the top of lots of ptfe tape - its been running for an hour without leaks so far.
