Someone's going to die in this weather
« on: December 13, 2012, 04:50:43 pm »
Mark this: you can have all the fancy kit to heat your van and water, but if you ain't warm, you stand a good chance of having a stroke or heart attack if you push it too far in the cold.  All the thermals/gloves etc won't help when you're breathing in freezing air.

If you are in any doubt about your physical ability, don't go out there.  Especially if you're an old git, and especially if you are an old git with circulation issues.

I think it's a matter of time before we hear of windows dying from being in the cold, not because they was on a ladder.

Think I'm wrong?

Plunging in an ice bath yes, just going out properly dressed for the weather no. If you are that fragile, you shouldn't be going out, let alone working, really!  :-\

Why would you be worse off?  'Cos you don't get paid?  Stuff that, mate.

In five years time, the stats will be death from cold, not death from ladder falls.

Because most people use poles
5 years time we wont be having very cold winters

think youve misunderstood me.  worse off as in just stood there outside not working.  there would be a far greater chance of you dying if you just stood there then doing hard physical work.
we live i england, not Russia.  it doesnt get very cold here at all.  breathing in cold air is not going to give you a heart attack.  next thing you'll be warning us to look left and right before we cross the road

I haven't been cold once this week  ??? Just wear the right clothes.

I did find half a dozen dead postmen stuck to the pavements though.

Someone is going to die. Full stop.

You can say "it's a matter of time before we hear of windows dying from being in the cold" but in 6 months time it'll be "it's a matter of time before we hear of windows dying from being in out in the hot all day"

People die.

I agree about the thickening blood issue but surely its like saying..when its a heatwave dont wear jumpers! If its cold stick an extra layer on, a hat and gloves too. can anything be more obvious ?

I used to cycle to school for 35 minutes through the fields of the Netherlands every day during winter. Very often way below zero, with winds to match. It was so cold my hair was frozen by the time I got to school and used to de-thaw over my desk. Everyone used to cycle everywhere in the cold, young and old. Lets not start with the ice skating when not being able to see 5 meters in front of you through a snow storm. Lets not think about the new years dip in the sea at Scheveningen ( I wasn't that mad ) I think I can cope with some so called winter weather most of the UK gets.  :D

Good grief!  People are giving this way too much thought! Some Brits are trekking across the whole of Antarctica soon. Temps will be -70 degrees C!  THEY will be breathing in the cold air for weeks, not us at -5 for perhaps 3 hours a day!
Maybe the whole skiing industry better close down for fear of people dying!  :P ;D

did you know a cause of death in very cold climates is often heat stroke?

remember to strip layers as you get hotter while working ;)
