How Hot?
« on: December 13, 2012, 12:58:28 pm »
Hi all you hot water users!
How hot do you have your water? I failed miserably today  ??? used immersion to take water up to 15 degrees.
Radiator in van to thaw the poles and reels.
Tested O.K. at home.
Did 3 windows then I could hear a crackling noise as the water came out of the pole then - nada - frozen solid not a drop, it was  -4 though.
Woman praised our determination and gave us a tenner for Xmas!!
Still, had a good month so far good excuse for a rest but I'll have to rethink obviously.

Just as hot as you can get it.

30+ should do the job.

I have a heater in van to keep pipe and pumps from freezing then have gas heater that the water goes through on demand. Have the same temp hot water at the start of the day right to the end of it. We find this is the best way for us, not lost a days work yet.

mine leaves the van at 75 degrees but by the time it has gone through 100m of hose on cold ground it is only lukewarm
better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove any doubt

If you are laying out your hose before the hose (reel) is warm/hot, it's going to freeze. Plug a male microbore connector in before you start, let it run till nice and warm, that should take the edge off. Then reel out the hose.

Apart from that, during the night have a fan thermostat heater in the van to keep things from freezing.

Just a bit of common sense keeps us working.  :)

First job today at 8.00 it was -7 so we fired up the boiler and just let it run for about 5 minutes with the water running through our hoses.  temp got to about 60 degrees and the hoses were soft and easy movable.  The water coming out of our poles was steaming ! We then dropped it down to around 30 degrees for the rest of day and every now and then just boosted it back up to 50 degrees. Worked perfectly all day. We also have one of those long green greenhouse heaters in the van overnight on a timer which keeps the inside of the van toastie ! we're still trying to work out how we're gonna stop the outside pipes and ports  under the van freezing up but luckily theyre very short so can be easily defrosted with the kettle !
