how many of you leave your immersion on a timer for heating tank

Me.

Except last night when I left it on for ten straight hours so at 13.33p per kw hour that cost me £4!

Normally I leave it on a timer for 5 hours.

How big are your water tanks?Would a 27" 3kw immersion heater element be adequate to heat up a 650ltr tank of water?Im debating wheather or not to fit one in my tank but asked a guy at plumbers merchants and he said this element wouldn't heat the water up enough to make a difference!

I presume it will depend how long its on for as to how warm water gets.

I keep Koi and a general rule with heating your pond is for every 1000 Gallons of water = 1kw of  heat (1k Gallons=4500 Liters)
Obviously the heater in a pond will be on far longer than just a night before work warming your tank. But i would say 3kw will be over kill but i suppose better to heat quicker and have it come on and go off every hour or so.

Dont forget may be better running it off its own socket direct from the consumer unit on an RCD, and the cable you use to wire it up need to be able to take the correct load over the run length of the cable.

Surely just heating the tank water is not enough is it? What about all the hoses and pump? Do you take these out at night? The warm tank water has to get to the pump etc from the tank?

If you have a nice big tank of hot water in your van you will find everything else works just fine.

I have a 650L and ten hours seems to give me about a 20/25 degree uplift.

Five hours about 15/18 degree up lift.

Anything above 20 degrees C gives supple hoses and no frost issues.

My tank is insulated except for a full width strip at the back about 400mm high which then warms the back of the van - pumps/reels etc stay frost free too.

glad you say that, yes you are right, if the wrong rating of fuse, cable and switch is used the it could cause wire or socket to over heat and it could either set fire to the van or house or even both.

I am on economy 7 electric , its on a timer 1am till 7am , i pay 5p per kw hour , so costs me less than a £1 to heat water and keep van warm .

27" 3 kw left on 2 hrs at night  2 hours 1st thing  at max  in 650l tank works and stays warm all day. Water is far from pipeing hot, just warm or at worst tepid, but then got the thermostat set around 40 ( which it never reaches on for these times). Bottom line it works and wont freeze. only thing is thermostat trips if set higher then about 45 but can live with that.
Considering fitting second element for speed of heating.

as it goes im having some wiring done on my house on thursday with this in mind with outside sockets for the van heaters maybe will not need the heaters just heat the water instead 2 birds one stone

yer thats true, why pay for heaters and the heater for hot water when you could pay for just one!
