its not a measly figure but i know for a fact one of the lads could prob do that on his own if given a van but he doesnt have a licence,

my issue is there just wasting time and taking there time where if they just began trying to speed up a gear and not stand around chatting etc if they came bk with 270-280 id be happy

I don't get it. Two blokes earn £280. Assuming 16 man hours at £8 an hour that's £160. Then NI, van, overheads. It's hardly worh it unless you have a fleet.

16 hours at £8 an hour is not £160 mate.  Check the batteries on your calculator  ;D
Close enough.  ;D

It's still rubbish. A bloke on his own should earn that in eight hours. Easily as long is the round is properly organised. What that is is a one man round and it has to pay three people.

Richy what time was your doctors appt?

10.00am mate but doesnt really excuse them not coming in on time or leaving to go out late

the works all rang night before and worksheets are printed off static tanks are full and takes ten mins to fill the system

i also asked them to buy some rock salt today after looking outside and seeing it all frosty etc before they went out to clean and they didnt

the workload needs to be cleared .  surely the workers have a day list ,they know if they arent finishing it and you just need to ask them why its not being done?
to my mind its sounds as if your jobs are quite high priced ,are these "ordinary 3bedders,  if thats so the daily list is prob not as long as some out there , easier to do

my own biz has lots of lower priced small works and so the list of daily jobs is longer, nontheless its got to be  kept on top of otherwise it all backs up.

this run of work is quite well priced to be fair and i find usually working on slightly larger properties two man teams work better than say on smaller three bed teams as dont get under each other feet, il have a chat with them tmoz anyway see what the problems were 19 jobs shouldnt have been a difficult task for them

two blokes earning less doing the job right as no compliants and still not happy.

Have you ever thought of paying them a percentage of what van does.

EG £400 less "van charge" to cover fuel, insurance etc say £30 per day then £370 split between you and the lads on a percentage basis that you see as fair.

This is how I will be doing it next year.

Just a thought ?

Id get rid of the unit if i was you.. which would reduce a lot of expenses surely?? then go out with them a couple of days each week instead of doing nothing.
Dave.

the rock salt fetching is your job to do m8
they get paid to clean windows ,not run errands whilst you spin round on your chair ;)

i did exactly this errand today fetched another 5 bags of white salt. found the van on its route and loaded a spare bag onto it. made sure the excess water was salted correctly on completed mornings work.
AND made sure they saw me do it too. THEN I SPUN ON MY CHAIR DOING LEAFLET DESIGN.. ;D

get them to fill van night before , or if you are able "YOU DO IT". ;D
just make sure they are gone for 8am.

i would be on that van tomorrow. directing them and seeing how they work.
get on there case m8

Thanks for this thread.
If ever I needed confirmation that "sole trader" and not employing was right for me then you have all helped me confirm that decision.
"Those who are determined to be rich stab themselves over with many pains" comes to mind.
Thanks

A two man team has to be turning 370 min to make it a profitable business Richy.  I would not be having a chat I would be putting it clearly this is what needs doing each day if you don't do it or can't be parsed to work leave now. And if they come back tomorrow night with bad results sack them. You could have there jobs filled by the end of the day.

not taking expences in account here dave really i just more annoyed at what they are achieving daily some days who knows tomorrow we may have a great day which sometimes happens after a bad day.

its just the old saying time=money in this game and when staff are wasting my time they are costing me money

But the thing is that you need £370 of work every day so you have to have enough customers. You also (imo) have to be one of the two men if you only have one van working otherwise you are just a non productive overhead unless you are canvassing full time.

I agree but he does have the work so he needs to do something like canvassing or go out In a second van and do some work to help with cash flow on bad days

carl ive got a screw fix and a builders yard on my doorstep at the unit it was hardly a huge errand to ask for and also an arco on the way to the work

i did exactly this errand today fetched another 5 bags of white salt. found the van on its route and loaded a spare bag onto it. made sure the excess water was salted correctly on completed mornings work.

none of them have got cars!!! i know sad to believe so i let them take the vivaro home at minute so one of them can pick the others up for work and drop them off with the theory they should be in on time instead of having to get there own way in walking or riding or relying on others however the vivaro is the one that seems to lose water over night due to leaks, now the cold night are coming the van will be getting left at the unit so i will either fill it at night or in the morning so they dont have to carry out this huge task ;D ;D

i would be on that van tomorrow. directing them and seeing how they work.
get on there case m8

im on there case tomorrow already planned to be in that van moaning at them, timing the jobs and seeing where there wasting time but we all know as soon as my backs turned theyll slip bk into there old ways

Have you actually asked your guys why they are not achieving their targets or leaving on time? Ask them what the problem is and how they think they could solve it.
