I've recently started using water fed pole system. This is my first morning with a hard frost. I've just poured a little water on my own garden  timber decking and paved patio. The water has frozen on the ground.

How do some of you other guys manage with this? Seems dangerous to be having the water turning to ice around a customers house. Hot water I'm assuming will freeze too.

Do you carry and put down lots and lots and lots of rocksalt at every house?

I'm just sat here wondering whether to go out.

Put rock salt down first.
Sweep standing water away from the area.
Trad clean downstairs windows and doors to minimise standing water.
Stay at home in the warm with tea and biscuits.
Hibernate until the Spring.

Not lots and lot and lots of rocksalt just enough to deal with the water Ihave left. I also turn my flow down to the min I can clean with.

My first winter same dilemma.  I would say carry rock salt but we definitely trad the doors when it's freezing and I have skipped some bathroom / toilet windows over doorways.

I don't wash doors when its this cold (it frickin freezing this morning) doesn't mater if your hot or not the water will freeze we do t use rock salt it will stain people's carpets we use pure white instead
If your worried about it wait till the temp rises , but you will be doing that alot between now and march. Welcome to the not so nice side of window cleaning

its a hard frost here in manchester as well.

put salt/grit down on pathways(but ask the customer first as some dont like it!!)

i still use a high flow as i can work quicker!!

go out later(say 10am-11am)


thats all you can do really.if hoses start to freeze as well then its home time and feet up or xmas shopping(not bought a single pressie yet!! )

We've just finished a commercial and in Tescos having brekky waiting for things to warm up.

You just need to be sensible, trad all doors, trad any windows above paths, point water at walls not floor when moving about.

Some days u can have to start later, no breaks, or just accept some days u won't be working.

I never have used salt IMO if too cold take day off.

Every wants to clean window. Its time like these that its a crap job I hope all the newbies and those considering this job are tuned in. Its not all heaven.Winter is a tough time for use all some time no income due to weather or the chance of falling. So pay heed its not all milk and honey.This will make you wish you did not chuck up that nice indoor job and love that pain in the ass boss. A salary in the bank even when its snows.Every one spouts forth about the joys of w.c and been your own boss it can be crap if you don`t have cash in the bank to tide you over.Were do you find this extra when you are new at it. Its not easy.

So I went later when the temperature had risen. About 10.30. Called into Lidl's to get some rocksalt. Read instructions. Don't put down near lawns and plants and gardens and some paving slabs that may discolour. So I didn't bother buying any.

Salt exposed paths and doorway areas.
If likely to freeze overnight finish a bit earlier.

Prepare van the day before; switch immersion timer on.

Have tea.

Sleep.

Get up and eat breakfast.
