water prodution upgrade
« on: December 01, 2012, 07:04:48 pm »
I am currently using a standard 300gpd RO but as we take on more work its only just producing water fast enough and by the end of the week we struggle. so I am thinking maybe its time to upgrade.

I am looking at the 40-40 and the Merlin but what is the difference and which is best? or should I be looking at something else altogether?

Why don`t you separate you 300 into a 200 and add another 150 lit to make a second 200 and then up grade each membrane to 15o liter with two booster pumps. This will push up your production to double what is was as long as you use a static system at less money lay out..This system will then be a tandem system or buy a 4040 ro, don`t go for a Merlin are far from perfect.

4040 would be the way to go probably but it's quite a big outlay. I use a boosted 450 gpd. It's ok for me on my own more a matter of switching it on at the right times. I try to top up mid day if I can and turn it on then. Usually produces from lunchtime 'till midnight.
Be cheaper for me if I bought another static tank and ran my ro all over the weekend than buying a 4040.

Thank guys, have been looking at various suppliers and RO types and am more confused than ever  :P

Can anyone tell me about the AXEON system from Gardiners? Is it similar to the 4040 and is it any good?

I want something which I can start small but add to in the future. We currently use about 1500L a day.
Currently I have 2 IBC's for storage and produce almost constantly all week.

Try vyair they are doing a commercial system that looks good, I'm in the same position using a 300gdp and struggling by the end of the week,

1500lt/day is some usage!! How many vans?

We used to run 5/6 vans with 400lt tanks off a single 40-40 with booster pump and 2 1000lt IBC's connected together.

Was more than enough - with completely automatic fill/flush the tanks were rarely more than half empty.

I have 3 vans on the road so we use a fair bit of water. I like the idea of automatic fill/flush, I imagine a simple float valve would be used to turn off the water but how do you stop the pump from running?

5/6 vans doing how much work per day though Ian?

We are all different with the amount of work we cover each day.
I know for a fact my vans use more than 250l a day, it is more towards 400 mark daily and over 500 on the odd day couple of times a month

I dont think 1500 a day is that excessive if working 8 hours normal working day for three vans.

a 4040 could easy cover 3000l a day and then some.

My advice would be bite the bullet and get a 4040 and a good pump after all this is the key ingredient to you making money. then when you need to upgrade again add another 4040.

I stoppped using ibcs now and have upright tanks as they take up less floor space (just cost about 5 times more)

Never could understand why people went for the cheapest ro they could rather than getting one they could grow into, you would not go and buy clothes to small and then try to shrink

Hi Steve,

I got a custom made system from Pure Freedom.  It works via a 12 volt float switch located in the side of one of the IBC's about 3" from the top.  This switch is powered by a 12v battery that has a dedicated charger permanently wired in so there is no danger of the battery going flat.  The charger is controlled by a tme switch that cuts in once per 24 hrs for a short period, to keep the battery topped up.

When water is drawn from the IBC the switch closes and energises two 240v relays, one which switches on the pump and one which opens a solenoid valve on the mains water supply.  I have taken a spur from the pump 240v feed to a standard 3-pin socket so this socket is live when the machine is running.  In the socket I have another timer, set to operate for 15 minutes twice in every 24 hrs of running time.  There is another 240v solenoid valve in the waster water line from the RO so every time the solenoid opens it allows all the water to run to waste, flushing the membrane.

This system has been running completely automatically for some years now and all we have to do is change the prefilters on schedule.  I don't know if it's entirely due to the programmed flushing, but the membrane is now in its 4th year and still producing at about 15/16 ppm from a 300plus input and there are three vans operating from it using about 1200lt/day.
