does the heat do enough to keep the van warm enough too stop the pipes pumps etc freezing ?

which one did you buy?

Some cheap 3kw jobby from screwfix or toolstation at about £25 - the longer one rather than the one that is about a third of the length. Just make sure that you don't have it touch the plastic of the tank sides, bottom or baffles.

If it was a really hard frost I might put a bottle heater under the pumps or an oil filled rad in the back.

I would love to love an immersion heater too.

 Unfortunately I can't run a power lead overnight to my vehicle. As yet, I haven't found another method of heating the water besides going the full flue and on board bottled gas boiler method, which I'm not keen on doing because of the flue.

Any other suggestions gratefully looked into.

I've got one fitted Ian - a plumber friend did it for me - cut a hole in the tank, flange and some sealant and Bobs your uncle
Mine has a variable thermostat that I put on 30 degrees and it warms up lovely
When I get ready in the morning the van doesn't need defrosting-the residual heat that radiates from the tank keeps everything warm and hoses supple and stays warm pretty much all day

Ill take some pics of it - but might need help uploading!

As a rough guess and average prices a 3kw heater on 24/7 will cost £3k per year
365 days in a year, 24 hours in a day mean 8760 hours in a year.

£3000 divided by 8760 = £0.34p per hour to run you immersion
so if you have it on 10 hours per night that £3.40 per day.

£3.40 x 7 days £23.80 per week to heat 

£95.20 per month (4 weeks)

16 weeks of very cold temps(rough guess) = £380.80

Your figures seem over inflated.  You only need the immersion on for about 4 hours; you just set it up on a plug timer.  You don't need it on 7 days a week; just the night prior to working; and it never freezes for 3 months; we normally get a month of weather where it potentially could freeze (maybe Jockland is tougher).

I am just thinking aloud.
We had a problem on Friday with frozen pipes as it went down to -3.5°c here and was still below freezing a 11am and hoses were still frozen then.

So when youre off over Chiristmas/New year when it could be freezing you wouldnt use it?
What about protecting Pumps and R/O?

I am looking into getting a on demand water heater or possibly immersion just weighing up the pros cons and of course cost

Even if you only have the immersion element on for 4 hours, it's still quite a bit more expensive (almost double) then using an on demand hotwash, and that gives actually warm/hot water, or whatever you want it at. Personally speaking, my opinion, this whole immersion thing seems a bit daft to me, especially since electricity bills keep going up continuously. The only upside would be that you don't need an exhaust.

im taking out pumps and draining systems
