Phone fraud
« on: November 22, 2012, 03:28:46 pm »
Just had a phone call by a 'charity' saying I had agreed to sponser an 'Alcohol and Drug Awareness' booklet they would be supplying to our local secondary school.

They make out they know you by using your name and business details, tell you that you have agreed to sponser andthat the book is now ready for distribution.

They close with "Who shall we make the invoice out to, Stuart Webster or Sunshine Cleaning, that will be £180"

"No I never agreed to sponser, and wouldn't do so over the phone"

They then go over your details a couple more times and ask again for payment.

The local school has this sort of thing     a couple of time in the past and recomended we contact the Police or Action Fraud which I did.

I doubt there is a book and thankfully I'm not such a soft target, but please be warned.

It would be a bad idea to advertise in it anyway!

All you would get is a load of drugy school kids after a job!

They have tried me with that twice, they were claiming to be part of Grampian police, dishing out a leaflet among police men.

After threatening me with prosecution if I didn't pay, I lost the rag with him and told him where he could stick his advertising.

A year later the same guy tried again. I kept him on the phone for an hour (the weather was awful that day), before telling him I'd changed my mind. When he started threatening me again I told him I had contacted Grampian Police and they had never heard of him. He just hung up.

There's always plenty of these scams about.  Usually it's getting you to advertise in a local free distribution magazine.  The only people who get copies of the magazine are those who advertise in it!  I asked one who phoned me if I could have a back copy and they said it would cost me £20 :o

A similar scam a couple of years back was that they phoned you up and said something like: "We are publishers of educational books designed for primary school age children.  Of the schools local to you, which one would you recommend to receive a consignment?"  I said I didn't care which school they chose, as all my kids were long past school age and all my grandkids didn't live in the area.  They asked should they just pick a school in the area, I said they could do what they liked, then I forgot all about it.  Lo and behold, a few weeks later I get the second call, just like Stuart:

"The books are ready now, we'll deliver them to (whatever school) on payment of our invoice for £XXX"

I just told them to produce the document where I'd signed to say I would sponsor, then said they were going to have a long wait for any money from me!

Never heard anymore.
