Sounds like the bottom fans fouling the metal case, a wobbly top fan is not much of an issue. ashby's do a curved
tool for taping the case open so the fans stop scrapping the 'lid' as it were.

hope this helps

Hi Andy

Had that problem last week with my Prochem Steempro mate.

Have you tightened the 3 nuts down resent if you have you may have squash the bottom part on to the blades like what Paul said.

Mine was the motor had started to seize up.

Ended up buying 2 new motors just in case the other one went  :'(

Hope you have some luck soon mate  ;)

Hi Andy

Are the vac motors old ?

It might be best to buy a new motor

Mine were getting old so just replaced both

The mounting screws need to be tightened evenly.

If the screws are tightened to one side or over tightened it will knock
the fans/spindle off balance or out of true causing what you describe.

Undo the screws and run the motor....if it still sounds the same then it's f....d! and will need replacing.

When you install a new vac, ensure the spacers are ''exactly the same length'' or that the washers make up for any discrepancy in spacer length. And then only just nip up....don't over tighten.

In other words, if these motors are subject to over tightening to one side of the body, they will run out of true causing bearing failure.

Although the advice above is spot-on concerning over-tightening - which might cause the fan "stages" inside the motor to foul.... I suspect you mean the cooling vanes which are on the back of the motor?  This is exposed when you take off the black plastic casing

The way these are designed is very crude - they are simply forced on to the motor spindle, relying on friction to keep them in place.  I have had motors where this has come loose so it no longer turns true.  You need to use something like a small bit of metal tube and CAREFULLY hammer it back on to the spindle.  2 problems, firstly it is a b***rd to get it true again, and secondly if you force it on too far it will foul the casing when it is re-fitted.  But with a little bit of jigging around you can sort it, unless you've forced the hole open too far.

The operating temperature at that point couldn't melt solder, nowhere near enough heat but lead solder is going to be the wrong sort of metallurgy - it wouldn't bond I don't think.  I can't remember whether those vanes are anodised steel or aluminium but it may be possible to spot weld, although you'd need to make sure it was running true and I don't know what effect the heat from welding would have on the rest of the motor, as the heat would carry along the motor spindle.

It's also possible that one of the vanes has been
knocked and is sitting proud of the others, this is common
too, if so just gently bend it back.
If the motors are over tightened then the first stage cowling
(furthest from motor) can be pushed down so thet the fan catches on the
cowling.
Carefully tapping the flange with a SMALL hammer away from the motor
all the way around, will ease the interference.

Andy, when you decide to replace vac upgrade both to 1500wt 3 stage, well worth it.
Be careful getting vacs off ebay just stick to that seller mentioned. Most of us have been
shafted by cheap copies  :o

If you need help let me know.
