Only offering up an opinion Mike.
It's a nice analogy the whole bus getting resprayed story but in reality it's nothing like what has happened. Just like saying buy one get one free on pasta and sauce is the same as buy one get one free on buying a car. Not only is buying pasta and sauce something that happens on a regular occurrence it is also a much cheaper loss for the manufacturer. Whereas car buying happens very rarely and is a massive loss for the manufacturer if it's BOGOF.
Carpet cleaning costs us a fraction of the cost of what respraying a whole vehicle does, and happens more regularly, hence why if bringing up the costing might cause a lost customer is it really worth it? Also please no-one say 'it's all relative', because it isn't!
