The windscreen replacement guys use them to power their Henry vacuums. Ones I have seen have a seperate battery in the back of the van. Don't think would be much good to power anything bigger than that, certainly not a hwe machine. They are mainly designed to power laptops, tv's etc.

The rac use inverters that run straight from the charging system, trouble is obviously that you have to have the engine running, only rated at 1000 watts, also, ive seen them advertised upto 5000 watts running from multiple batteries (48 volt i think),i guess its all down to the required running time and the duty cycle of the batteries

Think about it your're not going to get enough power out of a 12 volt battery to run an extraction machine. If you could they would all be battery powered.
As I said only really suitable for low draw items.
As Andy says it might be a different storey if you had a bank of batteries similar to a fork lift truck but thats defeating the object.

jhon, think u misunderstand, a inverter converts 12volts to 240 volts so of cousre u cant run one on batterys  and u dont need a bank of batterys, an inverter can take its source from just one battery the only reason  people use lots of batterys with an inverter is they go flat but in a van it can be left running, its not about the power the 12volt batt has a 12 volt batt coulndnt run a  house light bulb
gary
p.s a forklift is electric which has to be plug in to a charger at night like your mobile phone, thus it needs few batts to keep it going all day

Trouble is gary, when the guy fixed my rear window. His battery in the rear of the van which is charged off the engine ran flat. He started his van engine to charge it and run the vacuum at the same time. The power was useless and we ended up plugging my extension cable in so he could get finished. I just think the machine would draw that much power from the battery the alternator wouldn't be able to replenish it.
I'm not an expert on this but thats my take on it.
We used to run a Numatic twin vac wet pick up on flood jobs using a 2000 watt generator, even then power was less than half than it was off the mains.
