burst soltion line.
« on: October 12, 2012, 03:54:20 pm »

I had a burst solution line last week, first time whilst in the middle of a job ,the only other time the line was outside, water every where , not a nice situation, but believe it or not the couple i was working for could not apologise enough saying how sorry they were it happened ,dont worry they will clean the mess up, incidently they were an iraq cple, sat me down with coffee and home made iraq date cakes ( lovely they was too ) it was if it was all their fault and not mine :)  fortunatly i had enough spare line with me to finish the job.

The real reason I am posting this is to let you know of the differnce in price for exactly the same job regarding the repair.
I took the said line to pirteck who cut around  2ft off were it had burst and fitted on the same male connecter, did the job whilst i waited . price £28.00 plus vat. This morning i was working near a company i noticed was a hydraulics engineers Armstong enginners , i thought ok i have a little spare time  i will get them to cut a cpl feet of my spare solution line and fit the same male connecter , prevention better than cure I thought and as they tend to go near to were they join the hose , Why not !!!
The price, for exactly same job, repaired as i waited £4.00 plus vat .

I know where I will be going in the future  :D

Some places won't re-end hoses, saying there is some European directive against it, mind you, there's one of them for everything these days ;D

Is it not better to throw the hose as chances are it will go again in another place.

I use 3,000 psi hose in property now and always use my newest hose in house, the high risk ones are only used outside, eg I have one hose 2,000psi thats about 10 years old thats high risk ;D

craig i agree with what you are saying, how ever i find the weakest point been next to the wand , hence chopping off a vple of feet .

Pirtek are a rip off, they only really cater for large volumes of work, people walking in off the street get charged to high heaven. They do a lot of work for the fire service yet when my dad (fireman) asked to do some hose on my behalf it was over triple what the fireservice paid.

If you don't mind Simon, may I ask you where you get your solution hose fixed.  I've taken mine to Wessex Cleaning in the past to have the end of the hose clamped and it costs me £34 a time.

Every time I've been to Pirtek, 3 times now for 3 different lengths
cutting back and coupling replacing, they charged me a fiver every
time.

A friend of mine has the machine required to do job, get mine for nowt  :D

Last time i was in Pirtek, they did say they were not supposed to repair them,
however they did it and charged for privelege  >:(

As above, usually the bit to the wand that goes and best to cut it off each year.

I needed a 3m whip solution hose doing with threaded ends but no fittings

I wanted the usual high psi and heat stuff like the Goodyear Neptune

My closest Pirtek in Burton quoted over 120 quid!!!!! For just 3m!!

I tried Dave the Hose - just Google Dave the Hose and you will find it. He did it for 34 quid delivered and its excellent hose - massive psi and up to 155°C

Pirtek did me a 50 foot cut down to a 35 and 15 so 2 sets
of couplings for £88.

They did me a cut down too a while ago - only cost me £15 . But that was because I got the local lad then who I thought was the owner - found out later its a multi van franchise by me and he was an employee doing it on the sly and pocketing the cash!

Buying the hose though is a different matter - they have to order it in and wanted to rip me off

This reminds me of when I had a burst solution hose in a machine 2 years ago. The hose was under-rated and burst....long story.
I went to a local CAT suppliier on a saturday morning. They were closed but let me in. They gave me a substantial amount of 3000 psi steel baided hose. They also gave me a crimping kit to fit the hose.
I asked them how much and they said sort it out when you come back.

Hose fitted whith the crimping kit, never to fail agian and when I returned with the kit they did not want paying.

Now I must have spent at least half an hour with those guys giving advice etc.....well done the blokes from CAT!
