employees can be wage or commissioned based only

self employed, would give you an invoice

If a person is selling for all sorts of people they could be classed as self employed. If they are selling only for you they are theoretically not self employed at all and you would have a hard job convincing the Inland Revenue otherwise.

Trust me - I've tried and they would have none of it.

You could still pay them a commission only but they would have to be 'employed' by you.

what if 1000 leaflets are delivered and i dont get any response, the leaflet deliverer doesnt get paid!

I delivered 640 got 2 phone calls, 2 chances to quote, but no sales
I delivered 400 got 1 phone call, 1 chance to quote, but no sale even though they said they would definatly get back to me.

I'm waiting for my new leaflets to arrive from the printers, they made a cockup and i had to send them back to be re-done, all 10,000 of them.
I am aiming for 2000-3000 leaflets to be delivered each week.
Does this enquiry amount correspond to the leaflets dropped? Or am i below target do you think?

So i am allowed to get them working say 20 hours per week, but only earning a commission which could be £0 or could be £50 ?
Doesn't mean the nat min wage......does that matter for this?

The best thing for you to do is for the salesperson to invoice you. He can then sort out the tax etc himself and it covers you. I used a telesales person who just charged me for every lead. Simple

Only me!!

You can download the following from www.dti.gov.uk .  Leaflet IR56.  It answers most of your questions about being employed or self employed.  If you are unsure you can always speak to your local Inland revenue office they will give you good advice.
