Dent in the carpet fibre??
« on: January 27, 2006, 04:57:39 pm »
I was called to one of our sites, where a property is now occupied. The site manager asked me to check a circular indent on the customers carpet.....and could i get it out??
I will have a look....says I.....
Yes, there is a circular indentation in the carpet.....just where you would place a door stop or heavy object. It has a similar look to a drinks mark / ring left by the cup.
Apparently, it was there in the carpet pile when it was laid.....but the site manager said to finish laying it anyway, as it will come out. 3 weeks later, it is still there.

Carpet is:
80% wool
10% Nylon
10% Fibre-loc
Hessian backed

What the hell do i do with it??
You come accross it before??
Site manager would like an answer, because he didn't like my suggestion to replace the carpet!!!!

Thanks people in advance of any comments.

Kind Regards

Nothing much as yet, have sprayed fabric n fibre lightly and tried to rake the pile in the same direction, but stays the same.
Personally, i feel that the customer, although has only been in this property with new carpet for only 3 weeks or so has had a weight as a door stop. But i do not understand why it has not sprung back. Also, a bit concerned that the site agent said it was there when the carpet fitters rolled the carpet out......so is possible that the roll has been laying against something for a while at their yard.
However, as i had never seen anything like it before, i thought i would throw it out to you guys, incase anyone else had seen this or has dealt with similar.....before i go back to site next week.
Hope that helps...... ???

Kind Regards

Probably a heat set mark from the carpet fitters cup. I cant understand the fuss, its a carpet, you walk all over it in your dirty shoes, it get dripped on, scuffed up and beaten to death, so what a little ring? Tell him to get a life.

What about trying a little hand steamer to release the fibres whilst gently raking ?  ;)

If the backing of the carpet has been distorted you may need to lift it and place a small peice of rigid material underneath. A peice of plastic would do. This would force that section of carpet back into place and you could then re-set the pile.

I was always told that laying a bag of ice on the indentation takes it out. Yuo would have to lay it on a poly sheet so that it does not get soaked from condensation.

Good Luck ;)

I agree with the above post i lay ice on indentations and they always come out. let ice melt into the fibres then gently brush the fibres up.  I have seen it done on tv so tried it for myself but you may have to let it dry out and do it a few times. Just use enough ice to cover area where the indentation is.

Hi Guys,

It is the water which releases the indentation on hessian /wool carpets. The ice is just a way of getting the water in the right place.

We always used this method at M&S HO where I learnt CC in the 70's and it worked nearly everytime on very good quality carpet.

Never had water mark probs but it is worth bearing in mind on susceptible carpets.

Modern synthetic carpets are much harder to remove dents from.

Cheers
