rug patch came out
« on: September 26, 2012, 06:35:57 pm »
Hi all.

Cleaned a wool rug today and a small tuft came out, leaving a gap in the pile.

Not sure if it was already loose or the chemical did something to it.

Anyone have any ideas if it was me or if it was probably already damaged / loose.

Used prochem multipro for a quick mist prespray then fibre & fabric rinse, avoiding getting it too wet.

haven't got any pictures.

Just a clump of fibres came out, about the size of a 1p coin.

If it's isolated then it won't be your prespray will it.

More likely it was already on the way out. That's why you need to inspect and take pics in custies home then there is no argument later.

Is it tufted or knotted or what?
It's not expensive, you just can't afford it.

Its tufted.

Saw a few fibres coming loose, so inspected it and as I pulled slightly, I could hear a crackling sound as it
came out. I thought at first that it might have already came out and someone had glued it back in.

Never had anything like this happen before.

Trying to work out if it was the cleaning process or just that it was a cheapish rug that is a bit past its best.

It's not one of those latex jobbies with a cotton backing? Hate those things.

Unless you can poke them back in to some sort of foundation and glue in (which it sounds like you can't) either fez up or blag it. Up to your conscience I guess.

Dave may be right - could have been a bodged repair.  If it's tufted construction, dead easy to re-tuft!  Just nick single tufts from anywhere else on the rug and thread them in to the bare bit.  Some special tools are helpful like a curved needle but you could improvise in some way

I did a job yesterday, o.k not a rug, and was just doing the pre-vac with Sebo and doing around the door and edges when suddenly about two inches of carpet just disintegrated and disappeared into the vacuum at both sides of the door.  I was left with one large hole of 2" on one side of the door and a 1" hole on the other.  Was really panicking about what to do and in the end came clean with the owner who said the previous owner had a hamster who a chewed up the the area's and the previous tennant had tried to disguise it by just putting the fluff back in the holes, hadn't even bothered to glue it, the landlord had already found out, so luckily i was off the hook.

I did glue it back in, and it looked ok and not noticable.

I'm just worried  i'm gonna get a phone call in the next few days with the lady asking why
her wool rug is falling to pieces.

Will have to wait it out and see if I hear anything.

Also when checking the grippers all round, you know like you do everytime.  :) Keep an eye out for moth damage or just the casings.

Bonus points for bringing it to their attention BEFORE you start. Tell them Afterwards and your a villain for ruining their carpet
