Commercial Suicide? Yell re-branding
« on: September 24, 2012, 01:14:54 pm »
As much as it is dying on its backside.... did they really think that re-branding Yell to a weird foreign-sounding word is going to save it?!!  To a large part of the population (mostly the over 40s), "The Yellow Pages" is a national institution.  We all know it, what it looks like and of course nobody likes change, especially as they get older!

Surely this can't work?!  I suppose they just wanted to go out in style...

hibu - A new name for a new Yell

I am writing to inform you about an exciting change to our Group company name from Yell Group plc to hibu plc.

Our new global company name and brand reflects the transformation of our business and ongoing development of a range of new digital services that will help businesses succeed in the online world.

Our new brand will be rolling out over the coming months. The first change we have made has been to our email addresses, from @yellglobal.com to @hibu.com. Please add @hibu.com to your email account or safe senders’ list, so that you don't miss any important information regarding your business with us.

How does it affect you?

These changes will not affect the quality of service or range of products you receive from us and you will continue to be served by the same sales and customer service teams as before. Invoices and communications in the UK will remain from Yell Ltd until further notice.

Our Yellow Pages and Yell online brands will remain under their existing names and will continue to receive investment, reflecting their established, market-leading positions.

Thank you for taking the time to read this email. I will be back in touch with more news soon. If you have any queries, or would like further information, please visit http://marketing.yell.com/hibu.

If you would like to receive exciting news on our products and services, please click here to submit your contact details.

Yours sincerely

Richard Hanscott
Chief Executive Officer, UK

Crazy.

However something fresh and new can rejuvenate an old system - but equally knacker it up at the same time. According to the e mail though , the Yell brand will still be present online (and Yellow Pages) - so not much change there anyway?

Hi Guys

As an ex shareholder( actually made money but it was hairy!) my reading is that the business must go bust, debt is massive and it would take a goolgesque rise of the on line directory to ever pay it off, at present they can meet interest payments.

The way these things go is that Hibu will fail and the debt will be written off but Yell and Yellow Pages will continue as brands becaiue they will be sold on or taken over by the new owners.

The losers will be the shareholders but this has already happened and creditors.

Hibu will not be lamented and the brands barely tainted.

Cheers

Doug

Interesting, Doug!

Crazy when you think about all the millions of pounds involved that an organisation would set out to fail and lose money as part of a pre-conceived plan!

I might not be bank-rolling them next year then!

Hi Jim

The brands stand on whether they are cost effective advertising but the debt relates to when Yell was a much more succcessful company and they bought other businesses far to expensively.

It's a classic case of taking on a massive mortgage and then your income drops by 90%.

The people running Yell are trying to push back the tide.

Cheers

Yell only have themselves to blame... I experienced nothing but poor service from them and i was good enough to let them try and put right all the things they managed to bugger up regarding my account THREE times!!
I eventually managed to get all my money back, gone are the days of the nice ladies coming over to sell you advertising in the big book, back then you kind of had a relationship with them and they really valued your business....

Very true russ with the relationship with the sales rep from yellow pages.

They have put up there prices too over the years and got money from us when they started putting coloured adds in and charged high prices for other add modifications too.

I haven't had the same rep twice in the last 5 years or so, always someone new.

Almost got screwed last year by some w***er who tried to trick me with one of the packages.  I signed the order and only then noticed the book ad was half the size of the one I was expecting!  Cancelled toot suite and changed it.

This year I paid LESS than last year for the same sized book ad on its own but got the rest of the bundle thrown in for free... desperate sales boy needed his figures!

They kept the prices the same they year they down-sized the book, so the actual size of ad was smaller but obviously same % of page size which I suppose is what they sell

What deals/package can I expect Jim? What can I barter out of him?  I've got the guy coming round in 2 weeks.

If I'm not alone in experiencing abysmal service from Yell then I expect a name change is a good way of leaving a poor reputation behind.

Elfyn think of a few local pubs that have changed name in recent years... what do the locals call the pubs now?  The old name it used to be!  I don't think re-naming the company will pull the wool over any of their existing or past customers' eyes but it might help them in winning new business.

Shaun, you used to be able to look at the price list on www.marketing.yell.com but I can't seem to find it any more - maybe they removed it.  Shame, it was very handy.  It was a table of all the different sized ads and the prices depending on black & white/2 colours/full colour etc.

The ad prices vary from region to region so yours won't be the same as mine but.... My monochrome (black ink on yellow page) double quarter column advert on its own was £799+vat last year but this year I sat it out for the same ad for £560+vat PLUS got him to throw in a medium weight yell.com listing as well.

You really need to know the list price so you've got somewhere to start from... you need to be prepared because they come in with the intention of selling the maximum to you.  Presuming they have all been to the same sales school, they will try to throw the package deal at you but unless you want yell.com I would just stick with the book.

The package contains the website building - remember Mark D'Alcorn had that "WTF" moment earlier this year when he thought someone had ripped off his business ;D   They build a website for you and attempt to optimise it for google.  Unless your existing site is pants and not ranked anywhere on google (which I know is not the case) I would definitely not take that up.

The other thing is the 118 900 - the way it works is you call the number and ask for "A carpet cleaner in X part of Sheffield" for example and they will give you the name and number of a company - supposedly at random from their list.  This is the bulls*it bit they sell you, where apparently you can buy the privilege to have your name and number given out more often.

The guy who originally tried to sell this to me got kicked out, bright red with embarrassment!  He tried to show off this system, put his mobile on speaker phone and rang 118900 asking for a carpet cleaner in kettering.  The number they gave him was for a business that had ceased trading several years previously!  The guy said "well maybe he's still going" to which I said "I don't think so mate..."  I opened my understairs cupboard door and pointed to the blue Ninja sitting there and said "That's his f***ing machine I bought off him when he packed up!"

He quickly changed the subject.

At least someone managed to blagg their last pennies off them by making false promises and slick sales tactics.

Sort of ironic really.
It's not expensive, you just can't afford it.

Hi Guys

Share price is now down to less than 0.5p and a debt burden of 2.2 billion, doesn't take a genius to work out where this one is going.

The directories and Yell.com will carry on, it's the shareholders and creditors who lose.

Cheers

Hibu? seems to remind me of the post office  rebranding as consignia! what a waste of time that was too! I wonder if it's worth paying my Yell bill?  ;D

Quoting the comments in this thread was a great way to get the Yell.com salesmen off my back yesterday. THEY couldn't get a word in edgeways this time :-)...

Hopefully that'll stop them pestering me for a bit.
