Cleaning a viscous rayon sofa
« on: September 13, 2012, 07:02:11 am »
Why do I get all the tough jobs!

I've just surveyed a clean for two large, high end sofa's.
The constriction is quality tapestry weave.
The fabric contains viscous rayon.
Dye test shows it's not colour fast.
It's 14 years old and appears to be in very good condition.
It doesn't look very dirty either.

There's no way I'm cleaning this with the usual HWE process.

I'm 'borrowing' a cushion from the customer today, to test the low-water (Prochem Fibre) shampoo method on it.  If this method is inappropriate (still bleeds) I'm stuffed as I'm not prepared to try the odourless mineral solvent (oms) method before I've done the NCCA HSE training course (booked for next week).  And, I'd have to re-quote the job as it'll cost me a lot more in materials.

As I've never cleaned this type of fabric before, I'd love to hear your views on my comments above.

Give yourself half a day to do it.
Have an air mover to dry it.
Lots of terry towels and a velvet carding brush to groom the pile.
B105 Fobre Shampoo will be ok.
Dry / Wet / Dry would work better for heavy soiled areas.
Have done loads of these in my early days as our customers used to refer them to us.
If you have a dri master/cfr/min moisture handtool it would be better however you can get away with a couple hand sprayers.
I put a video on YouTube showing the technique.
I will post the link later as I am on my phone and can't get the link.

Hi CleaningSystemsUK,

Please could you post the youtube link.  I've got the cushion at home now, and I'm hoping to return it later today.

Fortunately for me, I've just dye tested my sofa and that bleeds in just the same way. So I can have a full test run on it.

Which do I fear the most, the customer or the wife's wrath?
Ummm help needed here too....

33 years ago, during year my first year (actually 2nd month) in this business, I cleaned one of these suites.
I had a device that produced foam from a shampoo, and I used the foam with natural sponges to do the clean.
It cleaned up really well, big problem was, that although no over wetting took place, all the colours in the tapestry bled out into the white surrounding fabric.
I got away with it as it was a make or break decision that led to them having it cleaned.
Well it broke!

Sorry I can't get a direct link on my phone. It can be found in this thread above tho.
Come back with any questions if needed.
A like on the video would be great if you find it helpful.

Great - very useful thank you.
I've added the video to my fav's (and 'liked').

The clean went well using PC's fibre shampoo.

I made my first youtube video last week: http://youtu.be/7babdWvvUmE
