How do I charge my battery for system off my van battery?
« on: August 13, 2012, 11:22:24 am »
Basicly I have just bought a new Nissan primastar, and wondering how to charge my battery whilst driving in the van, but then turn it off for working? And obviously I want to do this safely and not risk blowing the vans fuses/ electrics? Thanks Adam

Easy to fit if your that way enclined
keep it simple

Hi
Split relay only any use if you do a lot and I mean a lot of miles.
Otherwise you will find you still have to charge your battery - look through old post there was a guy called JEFF1 posted a lot bout batteries and charging etc.

I don't mind charging the batteries over night every now and again it's just when your doing it every other day it gets annoying! I Probly do about 150miles a week but sometimes the van can be running for long periods of time tjanks

Buy a flow controller with the built in battery charger I have one and have never had to remove the battery from my van to charge it

I bought a heavy duty split charger off Ebay, I only charge overnight with an intelligent charger a couple of times a week - and only if I'm working locally and haven't gone far the day before - I do about 200 miles a week.

It was easy to fit, one wire from the +ve side of van battery, a good earth, and connections to the lesuire battery, the hardest bit was feeding the wire through all the trims from engine bay to back of van - it would have been easier to just go under the van and cable tie it to fuel or brake pipes :D

Scrimble do you run 2 controllers from 1 battery or just the 1 controller??

i only run 1 controller as i have a 1 man set up in my van, you can easily connect 2 controllers up to 1 battery

Yeah just curious mate cause I run 2 controllers etc with built in charger and always find that one controller loses charge which means I have to turn the van on which isn't ideal.. Just wasn't to sure I you was doing something different!!

have you wired both controllers directly to the battery? or have you just spliced in to the first controllers wires?

i would check your wiring as it wont do that if its all wired in properly

Both controllers are wired to 1 BIG battery, no dodgy spliced wiring or anything!! Think IanH2O mentioned a while back he had the same problem, but not really heard much more...

It is possible when two controllers run of one battery that one of the pumps is set slightly differently or that the motor is less efficient. There are a host of reasons why one pump may take a higher current draw when compared to another.

I am interested in why one controller would show a lower voltage than the other when they are both connected to the same battery. One possible cause of this could be voltage drop along the cable, are one set of leads longer than the other?
Copper while being a good conductor is not 100% efficient as a result there is some resistance to current, so the longer the cable the greater the volt drop along its length

It may also be worth checking for any worn or corroded connectors.

Hi Ian, thanks for you inout(sorry for hi-jacking ya post H20) one of the wires is indeed longer but the longer controller is the one holding charge longer ??? And I've checked a re-wired both controller and can't seem to see any wear of any sort, so no obvious reason I can see ???

Hi I would suggest then that it is the pump motor on one side is not as efficient as the other to be honest it is not something you would even notice running just one pump.
You could even buy two exact same pumps at the same time and there would still be a marginal difference in current draw from the battery. The controllers do not draw much current at all some where in the 100th of an amp range just enough to power the micro processor.

To be honest it sounds like you have covered pretty much every thing else my only other suggestion would be separate batteries one for each pump but to be honest that would be over kill.

Two pumps will run the battery down a little faster and other than the difference in efficiency of the pumps motors you would expect to see the pumps draw much the same current on each.
