There's a bloke very close to you, lives in your street actually!  You might know him he's called Kev Nash :)

It isn't rocket science, you would probably find with a bit of time poking around inside it you could do most things.  I'd say the only people who shouldn't mess about inside their machinery are those who are a complete liability with a screwdriver in their hand.  Anyone else would get the hang of it pretty quick :)

There really isn't much to "service" inside a portable anyway.  Vac motors are either working fine or blown and you replace them as a unit.  You might want to check the carbon brushes which a 3 year old could do.

Pumps - don't know if yours is a simple diaphragm pump or bigger piston pump but again they're just a few bits you take apart and put back together again with new seals (piston pumps) or a new diaphragm, whichever applies.

Hi Jim

Thanks for answering my post  ;)

I take your point about servicing the machine myself - but im a newbie to this industry and the machines and i really dont want to do damage that is going to cost me more ££  :-[

I just thought that if there was someone i could pick the brains of and get advice from it might help me -  im starting out and cant really afford serious money for the service / maintenance - i guess its a networking thing - looking forward to making new mates too with this new business!!

I guess i will just have to keep my eyes open or if there is anyone out there that can be recommended - i would still be very grateful

Kev. :)

Kev no problem.  Really you can't do much damage, I would seriously consider just rolling your sleeves up and getting stuck in - exactly what you need to do if you don't have a big budget to play with.  You'll learn as you go, there's plenty of info already on this forum and others so if you have a good search you'll probably find plenty to read.  Otherwise just ask and some grumpy old sod like me will tell you to have another search ;D

You haven't got an email address on your profile - drop me an email and I'll send you a useful link ;)
