got to much work which is good but defo need to take someone else on but i just dont know if i will get that much more work done ,but it seems most vans do have two hoses and two people ,im just getting my buisness right but now i feel as if im just starting out again , i just feel like keeping things simple and goin out on my own and gettin a decent wage , i know im being daft but right now i really am stressed out  should i expand or just plod on ,,of course i know the answer but having got the buisness up and running ive got to start looking at things i dont know about all over again ,,i cant employ anyone for a full week ,also they wont do the job the way i would ,,do i pay by the hour or by house ,, a lot of mine are all over town so im paying for someone to so travel some of the day ,,how did all you other multiple operaters expand and were you as dubious as me ...,,,, and now my fingers are aching with all this typing arghhhhh

I employ 6 people at the mo. Thinking of selling 75% of the rounds and just working with one bloke. The trouble with employing more than one or two people is that it can seem like you are working for them not the other way round.

I've found it best to pay them a set rate for completing a set task or tasks. paying by the hour can be a nightmare.

I doo earn a lot more by employing but it comes with a lot more hassle

It's only hassle if you make it hassle. Have an office girl part time do deal with all the phone calls from staff and customers etc, have her put your cheques in the bank and update George or whatever programme you use. I pay £100 a week and she does just over 10 hours for me and it is such a relief and time saver(my mum).
It was stressing me out as the phone never stopped with calls from canvassers, cleaners, customers moaning, also I was chasing money and spot checking. Now I just deal with canvassers and chase money and the odd spot check when I'm not cleaning.

i know plenty of people with plenty of experience of managing people who still find it stressful.

i also know many people who run businesses who say that the main problem you have with running a business is staff.  you'll always have problems with staff.

Staff is always the biggest problem. Start with the view that they will be lazy , lying, cheating, fiddling layabouts and you won't be disappointed.

The only way to get on is to be a total numpty so they are afraid of you. Do I sound like a cynic? you bet.

Treat people well and they will let you down. Here endeth the first lesson

I have employed in the past, but will never do it again. I demand near perfection and total commitment from myself, and it would be unreasonable to expect the same from an employee. It would make (and has made) my life and theirs hell!

vince i've gotta disagree.  when managers treat me well and with respect, i have always repaid it by working hard and honestly.  making your employees fear you is a very risky manoeuvre- it doesnt work for a lot of staff and your far more likely for them to just stop turning up rather than resigning the proper way. 
its up to you to judge the people who are going to take advantage of your management and/or stop it as soon as it arises

im in a similar situation . ive increased my workload quite a bit and struggle to complete my rounds . i seem to b working all the time .(moneys nice) and thought maybe it time to get to get another van on the road .got a lad that's interested in working for me and understands that i couldn't pay him vast amounts till i get enough work to keep 2 vans busy 20 days a month. or do i get rid of some work to get a happy medium. nice to have a choice i guess. just think i might be missing a trick to make more money staying as i am
