Call me old fashioned.....
« on: July 08, 2012, 11:57:51 am »
I haven't got a website, twitter, linkedin, fax, facebook. To me it's too impersonal. When most people want to get something done they want to talk to someone now, and suspect you do too?

Am I missing out or is being old fashioned the best way to stay? Do you find alot of your time is being taken tapping away at the keyboard trying to keep all these things together?

You're old fashioned.
It's not expensive, you just can't afford it.

ha ha, I'm stuck in the 70's and 80's I think. Enough work coming my way, repeats, referrals (alot from carpet retail shops), 'old school' work, take my time and do the job right first time that's my motto.. cuppa and chat with customer!!

Terry

I'm finding it hard to remember what I used to do before I wasted hours of my week on Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin and umpteen forums - but I managed to stay in business for the last 20 years.

I think a lot of people feel obliged to immerse themselves in social media simply because it seems that everyone else does and therefore they could be missing out.

However, if it ever got to the stage where I was desperate for work, then I'm pretty sure that I would be able to drum up more work by traditional routes such as door to door than I could via social media.

Having said all that, my business does rely on the internet and websites.

Sorry terry, We get lots of the same people who constantly join under different names, usually they use gmail accounts and have no website Facebook or anything else that 'real' people have. They tend to start lots of post as soon as they rejoin

I'm sure you are not one of them, how about telling us a bit your self, whats your company name how long have you been  trading.... A General introduction  :)

That's ok Mike.

I'm 58 years old and run a small business in Maidstone area, Kent. We cover mostly everything to do with carpets. My sons work with me also. On the cleaning side we just run portable machines and my sons tell me im always experimenting with new cleaning chemicals too much (hence the questions).

I was told about this forum from a mate who is also on here, great resourse but I'm not too sure yet about the natives??

I wouldn't say it's crap, but aesthetics aside here are some practical things you can do to make it more likely they will call.

Because your banner image is large you make people scroll down before they actually get any nitty gritty. In fact they are more likely just to click back to google. So make the image smaller.

The main things are (and I don't know why but hardly anyone does this) you want your phone number in biggish numbers at the top.

You also have an offer button at the bottom which is great but you want it at the top.

Maybe you could keep the image but photoshop your number on it too.

If a site gets it's traffic from SEO you preferably want your text above the fold with your main keyword theme marked out ie in bold print.

It's not expensive, you just can't afford it.
