I am going to be starting my own pressure washing business very soon and have been looking at rotary surface cleaners.  I am initially starting off with a cold water pressure washer - a Honda 13hp with Cat pump capable of 275 bar mainly targeting domestic jobs, patios, driveways, gutters etc. My question is - do I buy a 20" rotary that does 200 bar or a 27" stainless one that does up to 275 bar?

Any tips to get me started in darkest Cumbria?

Iuse an 18'' with 250 bar. Over this width power will be lost.

Thought I would be able to use more pressure, the 20" max pressure 200 bar and the 27" max pressure being 275 bar.

Why will I lose pressure? Is this because there will be more jets?

18" is more than big enough for most jobs domestic and commercial jobs, anything bigger seems a waste pressure is a small factor as it all depends how much water your machine kicks out per min, mines only kicks out 180 bar but it,s a hot machine so there is no requirement for high bar pressure. Not all paths and drive would take high pressure anyway without crumbeling, I am no expert and only my personal opinion,best of luck with your venture.

Got the 27" on order now. Thought it would be better investment as it looks a lot stronger and would get me through bigger jobs a lot quicker. I know I will not be using it on full power all the time depending upon the surface to be cleaned. Hot machine is on my wish list.

Do many people use chemicals on driveways/patios? Been looking at American sites and they seem to use them a lot.

will be intrested to know how you get on. For me wirlaways are dispointing in terms of speed, however the lack of splashing is brilliant.

All surfaces to date have needed a light going over with the turbo

I agree with you Paul.that's been my experience too. If i remember correctly we have the same set up. Have you tried a hot water washer with the fsc ? I wondered if it would improve performance and remove all the moss etc on the first pass.

You've got me worried now guys. I could have had quite a few different lances for the price of the rotary. Do you think they are slower than using a turbo lance? I expected to touch up around the edges with a lance but never thought i would have to go all over.

Catergoricly slower than the turbo. I usualy make one pass with the wirlaway to remove the worst of the dirt and moss then a final pass with the turbo lance to remove all the litchen rings  etc left behind. As I say the main advantage is the very dirty moss etc is contained rather than being blasted about. if the area is small say under 10msquare or narrow eg apath then always the turbo lance

The cleaning finish on say unnwashed 5 year slabs or block paving is not acepetable after using the flat surface cleaner no matter how slowly you push it.

Ged, I use the PT250 setup. Never tried heat, Have thought about a hot box but no storadge space.  I think gary may use a hot setup?

Paul Gary does use heat same as myself, In general I only use the FSC once over an area depending how bad it is of course, and use the lancs to tidy up.
Hot water makes life so much easier as a rule no other chemical is required, down side diesel is becoming more expensive by the day.

I personally think that FSC are over rated. I have tried a 20 inch and gave it back.
I would much rather use a turbo lance with hot water as its twice as fast, as all you have to do is clean the drive first with the turbo and then wash it down with a fan jet. Job done.
