CLX 18 No carbon residue??
« on: July 02, 2012, 02:59:10 pm »
Hey,

I'm currently using an SLX18 and have to say very happy with it after 2 years....

Only down side is using it in the wet as you get the carbon residue on your hands and
if not cleaned off while working the pole will cease up.

I'm now contemplating buying a CLX 18 just for the rainy days.

Is anyone getting carbon residue on their hands when using a CLX in the wet?

Many Thanks

clx is totally different and you dont get black hands, I guess becauae they are red :) really though never had red or black hands from them, SLX your hands get back in any weather (or at least the ones I have do this)

Thanks very much for your reply. Yeah it's true, even when it's dry you get black hands. I find it helpful to keep a cloth on me and every now and again give it a wipe with the cloth. This is fine in dry weather and I can manage fine. It's just when the weather gets wet, the pole grinds so much quicker and can get very messy. I just feel that if I had a CLX in the van I could just use that and avoid all the bother.

Thanks

lol a pair of them gloves that you get in hospitals etc turned inside out (they are black on the inside) so you dont look a plank :-)

going from a slx to a clx is like going from Man Utd to Dover Athletic :-)

However, saying that, it is always useful to have a clx haning around, also a very good pole and at 18 ft you could pretty much use anything you wanted but the Slx is truly a king amoungst poles

It's not the base section you get the black hands from,it's the inner sections when you extend/collapse the pole.

I have to say, getting black hands is not the real issue for me. I can put up with the. What does get irritating is how messy it gets when the pole isbwet from rain. Unless you're constantly mopping up all the liquidised carbon the pole will eventually cease up. I was hoping that by using a composite pole (clx) in wet weather I would avoid this problem.

Its because the CLX is a hybrid pole. Carbon fibre inner layer and glass fibre outer layer. Glass fibre residue is clear so you won't notice it much.

Stripping, cleaning and then spraying the pole sections with a thin coat (no runs) of clear engine laquer will help for a while, especially on the 2 top sections that get the most wear.
I've done that with both the SLX and CLX poles we have.

TBH I think carbon fibre is not nescacary on a 18ft pole anyway. So CLX for me at that length.
WE CLEAN BY FAITH, NOT BY SIGHT WITH WATER FED POLE WHEN WORKING AT HEIGHT.

I have both a SLX22 and CLX22. The SLX is noticeably lighter and stiffer.
IMPO if you can afford it; SLX every time.
