Pre Sealing - Is there a Need?
« on: June 12, 2012, 05:36:24 am »
Sometimes apart from the obvious use to aid clean up the pre sealing of stone with a water based sealer can help in other ways!  Many of you are probably reading this thinking "He's Nuts" .  I however Don' t think so!

Quite often for example we come across older installations where the fixing methods were not so advanced and therefore if we pre seal  prior to any cleaning or restoration we are limiting the water ingress to the substrate therefore causing less damage.

A second reason to pre seal is if there is Efflorescence present! By pre sealing we reduce the water ingress so therefore we must reduce Efflorescence provided of course it does not have another source of water.

I,ve got Indian slate in my kitchen and I know the tiler pre-sealed by rubbing in them with some sort of oil before they were sealed.

This is another use for pre sealing. It helps the tilers with clean up after grouting although I am not sure what oil he used!

Not sure either, would it have been Turtle oil? Definatly something because he wouldn,t even lay them until the dust had ben swept off then the oil rubbed in. Then he came back the following day and laid them and sealed afterwards.

Never heard of that before but the main thing is it worked I hope.  Often boiled linseed oil and white spirit was used on porous stone and some still use this method today. However, there are much more efficient products available now! As the Germans would say "Vorsprung durch technik"
