Any tips on wool?
« on: June 11, 2012, 04:14:30 pm »
Hi guys,

Normally I just float about reading bits and pieces on here but had a quick question.... I have done a few carpets now and have just been asked by a customer to take a look at their carpet. Its a pretty expensive wool carpet and as I think they can get a bit more work sent my way want to make sure I get the best possible job done of it. So does anybody have any tips?

Im using a Ninja HWE system and I agitate by hand. As wool is fairly obsorbant im thinking its going to want more in the way of dry passes while being cleaned....

Is this a wind up??
This is a forum for professional tradesman, then you come on here asking a question like this.
If your serious, get yourself on a basic training course before you end up ruining someones carpets and giving every other carpet cleaner a bad name.
Unbelievable

Any wonder why some people have a low opinion of carpet cleaners in general?
Some of the posts i have read on the forums over the last couple of months are trully pathetic and dont even deserve a response.
Im sure they have to be a wind up to be honest, surely no one would try to earn a living with so little investment or common sense.

Jon, just use powerburst with some acid rinse in the tank, you shouldn't have to agitate and i'd be hesitant to anyway with wool. A few dry passes and a blower and there should be no problem. ;)

I think its a reasonable question to ask if unsure and who better to ask than a bunch of so called professionals, I think the responses have been childish in the extreme,

I wonder if there are any training courses for attitude and heads up ones own back side.

I will be totally honest, I am new to the industry (and make no secret of it) and trying to learn what I am doing along side my full time job. I have done the basic NCCA course and I am booked in on a couple of others to help me learn this. As commented by Hilton, I was unsure so thought it better to ask than to go ahead ayway and risking somebodies carpet.

And there we have it my friends. The top organisation for carpet cleaners in the UK and they can't even teach the frigging basics (it's not against you Jon), but they send them out with a certificate so they can boast about it to potential customers.

Thats why I have myself booked into other courses, because I want to do a good job and turn out a a quality result. I learnt alot on the NCCA course but could have done with MUCH more practical help and hands on time with the machines etc. Speaking of which, if there are any courses that people can recommend, I will more than happily look into them!

Jon,
If you have attended the NCCA course why not ask them for advise? I am sure they would be more than pleased to help out.

Jon

Wool will probably be more absorbent and take longer to dry, just do an extra dry pass.
Treat it like any other carpet but be aware that some stains might be permanent or much more difficult to remove than the ones found on synthetic.

Be sure to rinse out all the prespray properly and if you are using high PH products then rinse with low PH to balance

Jon now wishes he remained just reading bits and pieces rather than sticking his head above the parapet and getting a kicking. Luckily he's got a thickish skin.

It's not expensive, you just can't afford it.

Exactly, I thought these boards were open to all, experienced and those just starting out seeking advice but apparently not its a private members club for those who obviously know it all but can't be bothered to share it with others and are irritated by new starts asking why seems an obvious question because of course when they started out they knew how to clean everything.

Jon I'll answer your question;

By all means give it extra passes it will build confidence although is probably ,with modern equipment, not necessary.

carpet Identification is probably one of the most important courses you will attend and will save you any embarrassment in the future.get to know your local carpet suppliers, pop in and go round the samples familiarising yourself with various styles, brands and construction and you will not go far wrong.
I would add that everything you seem to be doing at present is correct especially educating yourself on what can be quite daunting at times.
Please continue to post questions on any thing you are not sure about, there is a wealth of experience on here who usually do mind and in fact positively enjoy imparting their knowledge.  ;)

You should never be afraid to ask questions, its the only way to learn.

This forum is the ideal place to ask them, & most of the time you get a sensible down to earth answer.

Even if you have been on a training course you probably only retain half at most of what you learn, so alot of things have to be clarified or at best just confirmed, so you feel happy to go out and do it.

I guess some of the negative comments are from those who have forgotten what its like to be starting up and not having a clue how to go about things.

We were all there once, unless you were born with carpet cleaning knowledge & skills ready to go  ;)
