I got a mate that fits bespoke kitchens for a company on a sub contract basis. He provides his own vehicle and tools and he gets £20 per hour. I am talking £30k kitchens and if he damages anything he gets it deducted from his invoice[/b]

So if he damages a £2000 piece of granite, it is quite brittle, and quite expensive, he has to work free for the next 100 hours?

He ought to take up window cleaning. ;)'

However, this lad (mid 20s) has been cleaning for 3 months and he really "needs" extra work. Last xmas he was doing 40 hours a week for £200. He has canvassed every other night and only has a day a week. I thought he might have appreciated 12 grand a year in his account.

This says it all really. It takes 2 years or more to build a run, and longer to make it really decent. Sounds like he needs to get out there and keep canvassing/leafletting/getting himself known if he is looking for £35 per hour. In the meantime you've offered him £10 per hour, which is very reasonable. He can't be as desperate as he makes out if he believes that £0 per hour is better than £10. Either that or he is too lazy to put in the effort to build his own work up, in which case he wouldn't be good for your business.

I havn't read any of the replies or posts.... but if he feels he is worth that, and he is so good... why hasn't he set up on his own? ??? ??? ???
I dont pay any more than £80 a day..... and I expect another 80 from them for me!

It seems to me that the problem is that he is used to the type of money that can be earned self-employed.  Although he would be using your kit so wouldn't have the expense of running your van/making the water for your work etc., the fact is that he is still stuck with the fixed costs of actually BEING self-employed (i.e. the fixed costs for his own vehicle are still the same, his PL insurance is still the same etc.).  So really, I suppose the figure that would need to be calculated to find a fair rate for him are to calculate what he normally earns, deduct what he is costing you for using your kit, factor in some profit for yourself, allow for the fact that he will have no paid holiday leave (compare to PAYE on this one).
The hourly rate that would be left is anyone's guess but it should be quite a bit less than what he would normally turn over in an hour but quite a bit more than he would get on PAYE.  It sounds highly likely that even allowing for using your kit, the drop would be too much for him and the same rate might too high for you to profit.
I can't go along with the £10 an hour mentioned earlier though.  If you had him on PAYE and paid £8 an hour, that extra £2 an hour would barely cover the holiday he doesn't get.
It may be that a number around 16-£18 an hour would be thereabouts but as I say, maybe there isn't enough wriggle room for you both.

Not sure about the intended tone so I wont take it as a sarcastic comment.

I would imagine He is insured and has an excess. Damage a mixer tap you pay for it. Break 5 grands worth of granite you make a claim. Much like if your subby smashes your van up or you put your pole through a plate glass window.

Either way he pays for it.

Do subbys require insurance to drive other peoples vans, or does the 'employer'/contract holder provide the insurance? That should give the correct answer. I'd seriously doubt whether someone driving your van doing your work is actually a subcontractor.

No wasn't intended as sarcastic. Sorry,  I meant it as in it just goes to show how relatively carefree window cleaning is in comparison to what I call skilled jobs, as opposed to window cleaning which I call unskilled. :)

No offense mate but why seriously doubt? Go and ask the tax man! I did and he said If he has his own business and Is registered with us he can sub and issue an invoice. Why all the drama?

Sorry bout that then jackie. I completely concur. I think wc is a breeze compared with what some have to do to put food on the table. There are even days I think its easier than being on the dole. Seriously, Job interviews, and form filling what a bind. ;D
